Fuel guages

I own an 09 40 PC , one fuel gauge does not work while starting engines. This was a problem when I purchased the boat last July. I cleaned all wire connections and made sure were all tight. I did a little testing today and came up with the following results.
Test A,
1. Turned on port ignition, no port fuel gauge Left switch on.
2. Turned on starboard ignition ,starboard fuel gauge worked. Left switch on
3. Turned port ignition off then back on, port fuel gauge worked .
4. Both gauges worked
Test B
1. Turned on starboard ignition, no starboard fuel gauge. Left switch on
2. Turned port ignition on, port gauge worked. Left switch on
3. Turned starboard ignition off then back on, starboard gauge worked
4. Both gauges worked
Has anyone experienced this strange issue.?
Any ideas?

Well mine don't work that way so clearly something is going on....

At the moment I'm at a loss.

Sorry - what do you mean by "Left switch on"? Which switch?

Pending expert advice, of which the following is NOT, here's where I'd start looking if it were MY issue -
Considering there are only three inputs to the back of each gauge (well, four if you include the blade terminal for lighting), one possibility MAY be that the wiring may not be exactly duplicated as between the two gauges. You should have a 12v signal, a Ground, and a sending signal to each gauge. I'd start examining whether the gauge is getting no POWER at initial engine startup, or whether it is getting no FUEL SENDER signal at startup - I'd then check the same AFTER startup and see where the difference is.
I might then start swapping wires on just one of the gauges, perhaps ground and 12v and see what happens, and then sender and 12v, etc. I'd also check to ensure that both gauges are grounded together to the same point. Bad or loose grounds have caused many issues for me, so I'm a believer.
Since it was doing this at purchase, I'd think it a good chance it was a cross-wiring issue that the previous owner just lived with - do you by chance have updated/replaced gauges?
Although this is clearly odd behavior, at least it appears you have two working gauges once you go through that freaky startup dance - so at least that's something to be thankful for until you get it resolved. I used a notebook, calculator, and crossed fingers last season until I got my sender issues resolved.
Finally, I might call Jason at Faria Customer Service (even if the gauges are not Faria - but he needn't know that for now) and tap his beautiful mind on these things. 800-473-2742.
Good luck.

For others not following, he turns the key to Run (on) and does not turn it back off, it is left ON

Use a voltmeter and see if you have 12V on the purple wire feeding the fuel gauges. There should be 12V with ignition ON.
Next check continuity from the Black to ground.
With the key ON, ground the sender wire (Pink) and gauge should peg full

Let us know what you find

All dodge thanks for clearing up that I turn the ignition switch on. Thought I made that clear but then again you know what thought did, I’ll check the volts, hothead grounds have been check.
Kimo thanks for your input. The wires going to the gauges are molded into the back of the multi function display so there is no checking connections nor switching of wires. I will dig a little deeper this weekend. Thanks for the input.

Side note and just thought of it....what kind of Volvo Multi Function Display do you have ? On mine, I large Volvo Helm View that displays the fuel levels in the tanks, you have to scroll through a few menus, but they are there. Since we have some year boat, any chance you have the same thing ?

I have the 4" display units. I wish I had the one you have. When I first turn key the display shows fuel error. When I go thru the "dance" and get analog to work the display works also. Probably a simple issue which I hope to solve soon

Gotcha....well I think I wish I had yours, grass is always greener.

I am missing a KEY bit of data, PODS Oil Temp, I have the sensor but my dang Display does not have that functionality, so I am blind to a critical bit of info.
