Generator battery charger

Didn't find anything on this so...I think my charger for my genny battery died. I am not reading any output with a meter. My question is do I need to replace with a battery charger or can I use a maintainer? My logic is I rarely use the generator and the battery is on its own circuit. The only work the battery does is start the genny. Do I really need to keep a charger on it or can I get away with a 1.5A maintainer?

TIA

Need to start off with what Gen, and what boat?

My 27PC has a 3 bank charger which chargers all bats. When Gen is running it powers the battery charger with 120VAC

370SS. Kohler Genny. The genny battery is on its own charger separate from the house/starter battery charger.

Many of the Gens have a built in bat charger, to verify, start the Gen and measure the bat. If bat goes up around 14V then the Gen bat is working and you should be able to get by with a maintainer

If it doesn't go up, then need something more

My setup is the same 400ss. Check to see if you generator doesn't have an alternator. My diesel Westerbeke does so perhaps you don't even need a separate charger for the generator battery. You would think there would be minimal parasitic drain on this battery connected only to generator. Although I appreciate the redundancy I'm not sure why its setup this way.

Finally got the chance to put a meter on the battery last night. The alternator on the generator is working and putting out 14.4V to the battery while running. I am just going to put a maintainer on it. I look at this as being no different that a car battery with less parasitic load. There is no need for a charger. The 1.5A maintainer will top off a battery that is only used a couple of times a year to start the genny. Thanks for the help and teaching me something more about my Genny.

On the 45, there is a dedicated 6A charger for the genset battery. You are correct, the only load on the genset battery is the gen starter, and the alternator should adequately recharge the battery, just as in a car. The shore-power charger automatically trickle-charges the battery to maintain. In most cases, automatic chargers require that the battery be discharged a little bit before the charger will kick in, so it is not unusual that your charger is not showing a reading on your meter.

I have a 2006 Formula 34PC and my dedicated 6amp generator battery charger has failed. I am the second owner of the boat and the charger that came with (Guest ChargePro) failed and is directly wired in to the 120volt power source. But when looking for an identical replacement I can only find a model that has a three prong 120 volt plug. If I cut the plug off to direct wire the new charger I am told it will void the two year warranty. Has anyone else had a similar problem? If so, what model did you install? Thanks.

My little 27PC had a 3 Bank charger, and every time the Gen was running I always turned on the Bat charger

I changed the main charger. Had to cut the plug to direct wire. Charger failed under warranty. Company send a replacement but before getting rid of the defective one to send a picture of it with the cut plug to make sure I don't re-use it. Little did they know it was already cut.
For whats its worth. lol

Yes and I cut the plug and attached it.
