Hard Top Noise

I am in the process of purchasing a 2011 45 Yacht. During the survey it was found that the hardtop is very loud when opening or closing. Almost a growling sound. Is this normal?

they are fairly loud. I had to replace my sunroof motor and drive mechanism and even the new makes the same noise

Thanks for the reply. I am comparing the sound to a car sunroof and it is alarming how loud it is. My concern is if it gets stuck open. Where you able to close your roof when your motor went out?

Tom V,
Mine happened to stop when closed. To answer your question , yes you can close it. at the rear of the hardtop is a lexan plate aprox 12x18 (guess on size). unscrew all screws and remove caulk. once plate is off you can access the motor and ram. you can remove bolt at hardtop and push forward with a boat pole or anything you have handy. while you have plate off make sure hardtop drains are clean. They tend to clog up from dust over time and hold water and then sunroof motor stops. I learned the hard way, previous owner never cleaned and when I opened it up water had already got to motor. Not a cheap fix. Formula wanted 5k for new motor and ram, I went on line and found it for 2500. When I reinstalled plate I did not caulk it, no need too doesn't leak, you could make a gasket .

Your welcome . Good luck with your purchase, hope all goes well. These are great boats, I've had mine for four seasons and love it. I am looking to downsize as I get ready to retire.

The motor seized on me several years ago. I was able to buy the motor only from Formula ($500?). Had to slide the top and the ram backwards, replace the motor, and slide it all back in... and it was at least as loud afterwards as before. Just a lot of vibration amplified by the hardtop I guess. And yea, my drains were clogged, too.

How many hardtop drains are there, where are they located, meaning once the plate is off, are they within arm's reach?

Have any of you tried lubricating the tracks, or anything on the sunroof that might make it smoother? Ours is loud as well and I was thinking that this would be a good step in prolonging the life of the motor and ram.

formula40pc - Our actuator stopped working. Motor works when tested independently. Can you share where online you found a replacement unit?

JJ ,I am sorry I do not remember where I ordered it from. That was several years ago and I am on my second boat since then. Get the model number and search it.
