"Head" Scratcher

Anyone out there have any idea why my holding tank level monitor would read "Empty" and "Mid" at the same time? (Tankwatch 4, 2008 27 PC) it's definitely closer to empty. Season just started. Used the head maybe a dozen times, uh, "liquids" only.

There are different float switches in the holding tank for each level. Mid is probably jammed with debris. Most of the time if you bounce the boat on some big wake it will shake it down.

Thank you Grand Wazoo! Makes sense. Blew the opportunity, hiding from bouncy seas this weekend. Gonna have to run harder next time out. This is the kind of repair I like!

A good bouncing around will work, it might but not long term.

TRY THIS if you can....

Empty holding tank....rinse a few times to be sure.

Then add 1/4 of tide laundry detergent...and fill the holding tank 1/2 full.

Then let is SOAK 3-4 days....if possible run the boat to slosh around. The detergent will help break up the GOOO that most likely is causing the float to stick.

Then empty, rinse and see if you are fixed. If not...you might have to replace that float and/or sending unit.

Toofast - good to hear from you. I wondered about that and had planned to run water to fill the tank and "slosh" it, then do a pump and rinse. I'll try the Tide next weekend and let it sit a week. Thanks!

rubber gloves and a mask....its a nasty job but you can unscrew the floats from the top of the tank and pull them out. Mine were all gunked up and stuck. Work perfect now.

This is a good example of how important it is to use single ply/marine TP.....as little as possible, and to hold the paddle down for several seconds after each flush in order to keep from making "paper mache" on the floats.

Can't say for sure with yours, but on the latest versions of the Tank Watch system, if the float that turns on the red light fouls in the "full" position, it removes power from the vaccuflush pump. This system logic is in place so one does not try to flush into an already full holding tank. But if a fouled red light is all that's wrong, you just lost your head until repaired. Not a good scene....

Yup that works as well...might even be a better solution than mine, but I have a weak stomach - so this method is a last resort for me

Dang. Gut tells me I have paper mache. We only use marine TP and try to use the head sparingly - and almost never for poo (As per Mike Rowe, poo jokes never get old.). Unfortunately I've also instructed the Admiral and crew to use minimal water to flush to cut down on pump out frequency. That's what I get for being a stingy curmudgeon. May just bring a pair of gloves and a mask next week. Like Toofast, I think I'll try the Tide first - and for the same reasons!

I've never tried the Tide remedy. Would be great if that did it. As for ours, we instruct all guests onboard that they should hold down the flush paddle for 5 seconds or so at the end of a flush cycle. It does "wash" the floats clean of debris, and minimizes this issue.

If you do have to open it all up though, it's a good time to change the filter too. One time with the system open is enough....

I had a gauge not reading proper for a long long time on our 37 we had. I did the liquid laundry soup trick a couple times and it fixed it.

I have always be lead to believe flush with plenty of water to make sure you keep the line clean to avoid potential odor issues when they get older. I don't worry about it as much during my weekend but try and do a couple good clean flushes before i leave for the week. IDK in theory it sounds good.

Aww s**t. So I used the Tide today - granted, I've not yet given it a good sloshing or let it sit for a few days - and I've a feeling I'm going to be pulling open the tank. I don't think it was the "mid" light/float malfunctioning. Mid must have been reading correctly. It took far less water to fill the tank than it it'd been at/near empty. Backed all the at up to the head in no time. At that point, the gauge read "Full" and "Empty" simultaneously. Either the "empty" float (would there be one?) is gunked up, or there's another problem. It's going to sit for two weeks before I get back up there to stir it up, rinse and repeat. Really hoping my mine will go the way of dstroyed's. It'll be hot out in 2 more weeks. Really don't want to sit in the engine room with an open holding tank. GAH!
