How to Fix Your Sun Shade when it binds up

So yesterday, it was a great day and I spent the day washing, polishing, and waxing my 2015 Formula 350 CBR with hardtop and sun shade. For those that don't know, the sun shade is a power shade that telescopes out to the rear of the boat. Yesterday was all day wax on, wax off. The boat looks great and I had planned for today's activity to shine stainless steel and check the vibrational dampeners on my 8.2L engine due to another member's post about failures on the vibrational dampeners. Mine checked out fine with no cracks or rubber separation.

I arrived at the marina in a wonderful day and helped first my buddy troubleshoot his 7.3 Kohler generator on his SeaRay. That's for another post. I proceeded to then shine my stainless steel supports for the hardtop. I then normally extend my sunshade to shine the telescoping arms and the cross bars. It started to extend and then the port side bound up and the starboard side kept extending for another few inches. Then the whole system stopped extending, wouldn't retract at all, and the cross bars are now in a little tension. See first two photos port and starboard of the sunshade. I didn't want to keep actuating the motors as I figured that this wasn't good.

So, I texted my dealer (Executive Yacht Group) on a Saturday. They were great. They told me that from time to time the sun shade needs an adjustment. (For over 4 1/2 years owning my boat, it never needed an adjustment). He sent me a YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jDHQDue8rc&t=118s
showing the procedure how to reset the controller and individually control the extension rams to readjust the rams to have them parallel again and then to clear the memory to reset the system.

However, I needed to find the controller as shown in the video. So, I think, got to be under the helm, right? Nope, no controller matching the wiring. So then I think, got to be behind the dash panel, right? Nope, took the dash off and see all my other control panels such as my AIS, AIS / VHF splitter, gateway, etc, etc.

Then I look at the wiring diagram. And it says, Controller located below shifter. And I think to myself, no way do I want to take the throttle shifter out. But I look at my speaker below the shifter and said to myself, "Self, those Formula guys probably put the darn thing behind the speaker under the shifter." Sure enough, found it there, was able to readjust the rams to make them all equal, reset the memory, and reset the position of fully retracted in the memory.

Was happy I was able to do the work myself and adjust it all per the instructions without having to have a service call under Formula Guard. Dealer was great to be responsive on a weekend and I now know how to adjust it in the future if ever needed.

Hope this helps those who have a sunshade if you ever get in a bind (pun intended).
