Idle ops

Starting to think about moving up.....

We currently have an 07 34 PC, and are thinking about the 40, and possibly the 45 in the foreseeable future. Not that we are going to go on extended trips operating at idle, but unless we are headed for a destination, a large amount of our on-the-water time historically is spent at idle..... for extended periods of time.

That said, and having always heard that diesels are less problematic when operating at 70-80% of rated power, is there any harm in extended idle operation with the IPS engine set up, or is this a non-issue with modern diesel engines?

BTW, this would be our first diesel boat, so pardon me if this is a dumb question.

Thanks,

If I were you I would look at a 48 yacht. Cummins power is similar to semi trucks, lots of idle time. With the technology today and Volvo IPS I have been told they do not oil like convectional Diesel power to make them cleaner and less smell at Idle. I do not know if this would be a problem or not. If you ask Volvo it is not a problem, if you ask our tech it is. I do know that the 48 Yacht is an awesome boat and there are several around the country for sale, we have two in stock at our dealership as well as a 2008 45 IPS.

I am running 440 Yanmars in a 40 PC. It is my understanding that it is ok to run them at slow speed for extended periods of time. After running them for 2 hours I will run them for 15 minutes at 60 70 percent, or at the end of the day. I believe that the newer electronic diesels can run all day at low speeds. I still would not, diesels are happiest when the are humming along with a load.
