Imron and Chip repair

Now that Sandy is behind us and fiberglass repair shops are not so overwhelmed, Does any body know of a repair shop to do fiberglass work ? I purchased an 07 Formula45 in 2013 to replace my 48 totaled in storm. The previous owner drove with the anchor partially down and formed a smiley face with chips on the bow. My hull is Blue metallic and the white chips stand out. Had a couple of repair guys look at it but one doesnt have an indoor shop and the other two never got back to me. I am looking to get this done next winter but would like to make the arrangements now. I was trying to get some Imron locally for touchup with no luck. Formula will sell but hazmat shipping I heard is very costly. I bought in New Jersey in the Sandy Hook area, will travel to the right place and the right price

You can contact Comstock's in Brick, NJ. As for Dave in Service. Tell him that Billy of Unforgettable sent you his way ;-)

FYI, Larry of Comstock's painted my 07 31 PC (Rub-rail up) after Hurricane Sandy damage. Be warned, with a "colored" Imron painted hull, you cannot feather out the paint. As such, in your case you will have to paint the entire hull from the Rub-rail down which will be quite costly.

That said, believe it or not, it may be best to speak to directly to Formula who delivers new-built boats from the Factory to Comstock's on a regular basis. Since the Tractor/Trailer are "Formula owned" they go back to Decatur empty. As such, you could work out a discounted rate for the ride out there.....

Just a thought! Imron is a great, great product/look but as you will find out, its best never, never to get they type of nicks in it.

A trip to the factory will solve your shipping issues, plus, you will not regret it. I highly recommend every Formula owner make this trip at least once!!!

Billy, Thank you for the info coming from someone who has had the work done there means alot. Gsent great idea cash and carry.lol I have been wanting to go to the factory. Might do after this boating season

Rub-rail up was ~$3,500. I would think that Rub-rail down would be ~$7,500 and although it is a good job, it's not a factory-paint job. Which is why I suggested that it may be in your best interest to have it painted directly by Formula.

The trick it s that the entire boat needs to be indoors in a controlled area i.e., minimal humidity with sufficient ventilation.....

The Factory spot repairs all the time.
Imron is a very poisonous product, and must be sprayed in controlled conditions. On the last Factory tour, their touch up guy was giving us tips on how they repair damaged areas, and areas that get messed up. It can be done, so do some more investigating.
I would ask if the Factory could send their paint guy to your dealer and perform the repairs.
Would not hurt to ask.

Great, great idea! Heck, he would leave on a Friday, do the work on a weekend and be back to work on Monday not to mention that he would have some extra $$$ in his pocket and get to see the Northeast ;-)

Now all you have to do is find a location that would suit him to do the work.....

I shipped my 400SS back to the factory for Sandy repairs. The factory is able to feather Imron perfectly. One side was repainted and the other was just touched up. I inspected meticulously found no flaws. My boat came back from a complete factory recondition. Every little odd and end was fixed. The boat looked new inside and out when I got it back.

BTW, the trip to the factory to inspect the work was a great experience. I got the full tour. Airfare is cheap to Ft. Wayne and a rental car cost about $35. Interesting side note, I submitted my travel expense to my insurance company and they paid!

Hi the best way to touch up your Imron first see if you can find a color code. Or if no code find a Dupont automotive paint distributer close to you ask them if they have a color camera, if so take the boat there, have them take a picture and mix your color in Imron . also purchase a quart of clear imron. have your bodyshop repair the marks, spray the spot, fog out the blend and put 1 coat of clear on it 8 inches past color blend. buff the next day make sure the body shop hand rubs 12 inches past all paint work before color and clear. works every time. been doing this for 42 years now. It may be worth giving Comstock Yacht Sales in Brick, NJ a call. Ask for Dave.

That said, Comstock's have an excellent paint/refinish person however fading out Imron was not an option when I had my 07 31 PC painted last year from the rub-rail up. Not to mention, finding Paint booth with the appropriate ventilation / humidity control for a boat is next to impossible at least at the Jersey Shore it is.....

there are inflatable plastic paint rooms that mobile chip repair services use when they come to you so the boat can be anywhere ... if you have one. Your local bodyshop knows the rules... Dale
