IPS Maintenance?

Hey Guys,

I have a deposit on a 40PC with IPS's, I'm moderately mechanical and don't mind getting into it some. What can I expect? What should I bring a company in for them to do? ANY tips would be great, thanks in advance.

What year?

There's not much to the maintenance side, stick to the annual regiment of oil changes and filter. As you up north you will probably haul anyway so do it every winter.

I'm sure you will have a Volvo guy do engine and drive survey, oil samples etc. Pick his brain as you watch him work, most are good with it. If there aren't cutters on them, I would recommend them as they will protect the seals from fishing line etc, which will contaminate the drives with seawater.

I check oil level often (should be every time but), don't overfill, its a closed system and has no where to go. Look at the dip stick, oil should be nice and clear.

Clean them well and Volvo makes a corrosion preventative you can spray on the thru hull seals to protect from bilge water splashing etc. One can will do both drives.

Not much more to it.

Steve's marine on LI has an outstanding reputation, all the way to FL.

Good luck

Bob

Awesome Bob, thanks for the info. I'm making my maintenance list and forming a log I want to be on point for the entire craft.

Ct - I think you got everything covered....the survey should catch the details.

Your YEAR has the updated systems as it relates to the drives, updating oil cooling, updated pulleys (I think) - but they should be stainless vs rubber....you should have the updated strainers as well.

ONLY issue you might have is the sealing rings MIGHT still be Nibral vs. Stainless...if in Salt you MIGHT have a problem with the Nibral over time....if so use that to negotiate....about $15K or so.

Best of luck and after the survey today, let us know what questions you may have.

Thanks TF,

we did the survey and she looks pretty good. There is a short list of items to be fixed.

The Port Pod Drive had bad moisture in it, it was milky so they said they are going to pull it and have it rebuilt.

The Props were just redone they had told me, and when we hoisted it out they had rope already frayed in between the dual props. Is there anything that I should think about to prevent that?

I grabbed the serial numbers of the motors and the pods, so I'm going to call the manufactures to see what they can tell me about them. But that won't tell me anything about work done after they left and they don't have any maintenance history on the boat.

That Pod set up is incredible I've never run one before, its amazing! One thing that isn't working is the option to hit the button to keep it in one place, it pops up on the screen that it isn't available?

since they're going to rebuild that pod, you should check the sealing ring (ring between the pod and the hull basically) and make sure it's stainless like Toofast said...even if it is, make certain it's not showing any corrosion or that could be the cause of your milky oil. was the rope on the props on the port side as well? if that's the case you'll likely need new shaft seals to keep future water out, and that's likely why your oil is milky.

Dynamic Positioning System is an option with VP pods...i believe it launched in 2010, but not sure if Formula was using it in '14. i think the easiest way to see if you have it, is to look on the roof for a really large GPS antenna. based on the screen message though, i'm guessing you don't have it.

congrats, and good luck!

While your out of the water have the cutters installed, it will help protect from lines, etc. Cheap preventative, probably less than $250

CT - Congrats!!! Which 2014 did you pickup, Lyndhurst or Stamford? You will not regret!!! Don't hesitate to call Brian and his team at McDonnell Marine in Simsbury. Very knowlegeable and great reputation.

Thanks for the info, I’ll get the ring checked for ss if it’s not I’ll have them swap it to stainless I’ll have them pull the starboard side if it’s not and do that one also. Just so it’s done and I don’t have to worry about it later.

Yeah I’m definitely going to do the cutters while it’s out, I had an incident a couple years ago where there was a submerged rope in the channel and it tore up my cutlass bearings in my current boat that was a nightmare.

I did not see that antenna for the GPS positioning system but I have a lot of pictures and I’ll do some more looking to be sure. I’ll check the price of the option and maybe do it this season.

Hi ML, its the one from Lindenhurst. When we did the sea trials I was amazed at how she runs. This is going to be a whole New World, we’re going from boating to yachting! Lol

So now I’m only waiting on small list of repairs and updates to be done, probably going to take delivery in two weeks. It’s going to be the longest two weeks ever. I don’t even wanna take my current boat (the trade in) out now.

Congrats...looks great - I think I will add the cutters to my winter project list.

The annual oil changes are really important with these drives....the changing to the stainless ring is really only critical in salt water...so good move on that one.

Best of luck and can't wait till you get her running....

Not as fast as I would like LOL, the survey found moisture in the port pod. So Formula the factory authorized a $20K brand new pod & installation and its coming direct from Volvo Penta. So we have a delay in delivery. I'm HOPING this weekend, or at worst next week.

I’ve read that moisture in them is common, thoughts? Sounds catastrophic when that happens. $20k is a lot.

The seal rings from what I'm told need to be updated to the Stainless Steel from the Nibral and it solves the issues. I've put in a request for that swap out as we do the work.
