Learning electronics -- Raymarine and E80

I have rader and an E80 system on my boat. I know how the radar works and functions, but the more complex parts like charting and gps, I have no clue about. The fishfinder or bottom reader isn't working either, it worked on sea trail, but doesn't now and i dont know why.

Is there a place I can go to learn about all of this?

I have also heard about the forward facing sonar. What does that require and how much is it, sounds cool. How fast can you go before you are traveling too fast for it to read?

Go to the Raymarine site and create a userid with them. You can register your electronics on line with them. They have a great tutorial for registered users that walk you through the basics of all their equipment.

Open your Formula Owners Manual. There is a Burgundy colored canvas envelope that says Raymarine. Inside is a few manuals, there is one that is a quick reference I would start there. Don't be afraid to hit buttons and try differant thing you can always do a factory reset and go right back to square one.

What about the forward facing sonar? Is that worth it? How much do they run and what should I look for?

Thanks.

Troy,

Interphase makes several versions of "forward" facing sonar. In essence, these units use twin transducers to view either a slice in front of the boat or side to side for roughly a 45 degree view off the bow. I do no believe that there is enough forward visibility at cruising speed to help "see" ahead. But at passage way speed, one should be able to navigate a questionable channel. Below is Interphase's web link for more info.

Troy,

When I checked out Interphase's web site, they now have a "black box" that will intergrate with most chart plotters. What a nice toy that would be to navigate harbors that aren't well marked.

And you are welcome,

Greg
