Off season upgrades, what say you.

No issues accessing the building yet, thankfully....but time will tell. Crazy times.....thinking about boat stuff is helping to calm the nerves.

Totally agree. If my boat were in the water I'd be out on her every day. What better way to socially isolate???

I asked my mechanic about switching to the ProMariners from my Charles, and his advice was to not do it unless the Charles was broken (which it isn't)

Very nice! No issues getting into the warehouse with CV restrictions?

I agree that his boat looks great. With respect to the Coronavirus, CA just told everyone to shelter in place, eg, stay home except for essential things like food and doctor shopping. My boat is 35 minutes away----thankful that others at my marina have keep me appraised and told me such things as, "Your boat is secure--lines are tight, etc." The divers did bottom service last week so we're good for the next 3 weeks.

Thanks Alec. I'm sure we'll be told to do the same here on the east coast. If we are going to be mandated to shelter in place I would rather do it NOW than wait for another few weeks to pass.

Wait, since when did boating become non-essential? I think we should collectively protest!

Really? I wonder what their reasoning was...the Promariners seem so much more sophisticated and better equipped to handle/maintain many different battery types. My Charles had been in service for 13 years which is very impressive.....I really think the simplicity of design is the reason it lasted so long. Time will tell with the new units....but I'm really impressed with them so far.

So he said he has seen evidence of unreliability with the ProMariners - I have no evidence of that, just his word. He said the Charles units are literally tanks so just stay with it until it breaks. Personally I love more high tech stuff so I was a little disappointed when he said that. But I'm getting so many more cool toys for this season that I can deal with it...

Made some more progress.....got the radar mounted and the cockpit TV mount setup. All of the cables from the radar are terminated with quick connect connectors so that I can remove the arch and mount in one piece for transport.

Cockpit TV location still needs power port installed for power cable.

Had a chance to get the Marinco Dual Trumpet horn installed and working as well as install a second set of tweeters on the upper arch.

Installing the the tweeter on the port side of the arch was a PITA! Had to use larger screws because the JL Audio screw heads broke when trying to screw them in (pilot holes not big enough). When I installed larger screws their heads prevented the tweeter assembly from popping into the base. This ^&*#$ show went on and on until I found the right combo of screws.

I've been watching this thread and should add to it. Here is what I have been working on this off season:

Removed all the raymarine electronics and have been slowly adding the following back: Simrad NSS 7evo3, NSS12 Evo3, vessel view link, AP44 autopilot controller +nac2 + RPU80, halo 24 radar, AIS, and other misc electronics.

Converted to hydraulic steering + the autopilot
In the middle of replacing exhaust manifolds, and did the starboard side valve cover gasket because it was leaking
Just finally got in shiny very expensive water pumps from Hardin Marine
Along with all the other yearly maintenance, it's been a big project.

For what it?s worth, I went through one ProMariner on my last boat. The first unit failed internally. The way I had mounted them sheltered the units from any water dripping in through the hatch. I can?t say I would have sprayed them when washing the bilge either, since they were mounted up higher.

Maybe just bad luck. The other thing I didn?t like about it was the tendency to boil the water out of my batteries. I found the charger constantly cycled between high charge mode, and maintain, such that I had to add water once every few weeks. I ended up turning off the charger when I left the boat for the work week, and that solved my issue. After that I made it three years without changing batteries (and they still are good now). Previously I was changing them once a year.

Again - maybe my bad luck, or perhaps it?s good practice to shut the charger off when you leave for an extended period of time (a few days or more). That?s what I plan to do with my new boat.
