Opinions on upgrading

So I have a 2008 34PC with 496s and Bravo 3s. A guy in my marina is selling his (not sure if it's 07 or 08 )8)8) 40PC with Volvo IPS drives. It's in stellar condition. Should I pull the trigger on this? My tendency is to do it.

I always have lots of questions but the obvious answer is yes I would do it

You want to dig in the details of the pods and what upgrades have been done so you know what might be coming at you

Pods will need service and the asking price is reflective of that. The mechanic at the marina says no problem waiting to the fall to do that. I'm expecting around 25K for the job. I'll ask him about the upgrades that have been done, or is the service what you're referring to?

BTW - I was sold when he took me from the traveler slip to the owners slip. It feels like so much more boat than my 34PC

How many hours on it. Is all the diesel maintaince up to date. Make sure you have an engine and boat survey. I just sold my 40 PC. I was shocked when the surveyor came out and told me that there was water intrusion in the rear port hull.

Yeah I would for sure doing oil analysis on both the engines and pods and make sure the oil has been changed recently.....

Getting a survey. Engines have 660 hours. Maintenance has been done as required, my marina does the work.

Awesome all I can say is it's an awesome boat.... is a little bit more maintenance compared to the 31 or 34 that I've had and you have..... but well worth it.

There is a list of things that you should check out with the enginea and pods... I'll look it up and try to send it over to you here but you're going to love it if you go through with

Of course! every time someone can afford to make a jump a boater should! There is a big difference in feel of those two boats and you are going to have a blast! Share some photos and keep us posted on how the survey's and deal shakes out for you. Good luck.

YES without a doubt, J I gotta tell ya the pods and volvos are nothing short of amazing. The difference in just your gassers vs diesel is worth the trade up, and to add the pods? Its a no brainer. Just get a good survey done on her, get the serial numbers of the pods and call the factory to check if if has nibral or SS rings in them. There was an update to SS a few years back that's a consideration also. Not bad either way but just so you know.

I had http://www.soundshoremarine.com do our survey and he (John) did the pod inspections and was great. He gave us thermal pictures of the entire engine system.

Good Luck and let us know how you make out.

I think the 40 PC with IPS is a great boat. I suggest you get detailed maintenance records for the engines and drives. The older IPS units need regular maintenance and I highly recommend you get engine and IPS oil samples analysis done prior to purchasing. IPS repairs and or overhauls are very expensive. Just my opinion.

Thanks!

My marina has been maintaining the boat since the current owner purchased it about 6 years ago, not sure if I could get my hands on the previous records but I'll ask if they're avaialble

Those have already been collected and are being sent out today

I'm going in knowing I will be doing an IPS overhaul after the season is done, the pricing on the boat reflected that.

BTW my offer was accepted so I'm hopefully moving forward pending the results of the survey and oil sample analysis. Very exciting.

Thanks a lot!

Question: The submergible swim platform - what is the capacity? I have a big Jet Ski (Seadoo GTX 300) can it handle that?

They are different per serial number, but ours is 1200 rated on a 40PC

Call Sean at the factory and give him your hull number and he can tell you exactly 260-724-1412

Congrats. Great boat. You will love it. I love the space of my 40!! For the boating we do, the gassers I have are perfect. That being said, I am envious of you guys with the diesels for noise levels and fuel economy. On the plus side, I do not have the maintenance costs you do as I have inboards and not pods.

My notes on IPS "upgrades" for our vintage Pods

1) Pulleys on drive belts are nylon - ideally upgrade to metal both on supercharger and engine

2) Strainer Cover - old style is easy to leak under pressure and bow salt water all over engine, get upgrade kit

3) Pods - new style OIL COOLERS - keeps drives WAY cooler - this is perhaps the MOST important bit

4) Pod Rings - most likely still have Nibral ring...could corrode in Salt...upgrade to Stainless

5) Maintenance - make sure drive seals have been replaced - could get water in drive if not....every 5 years, but I did go longer in mine and they were about ready to give....so no more than 6-7 for sure.

STILL after all the above - you will have a boat that will be solid for years and although a BIT more maintenance over all...well worth it.

If you have any specifics...just keep the questions coming....
