Overheating engine

okay....so now they're taking the heads of monday or tuesday, and bringing in some diesel expert to take a look. :( i was hoping it would be in NJ by Monday.

soooo.....i don't know much about engines, and since mine is not in my boat anyways...i decided to clean. :) never a better time to work on the imron...can't get at it too well when it's in the water, and i don't haul over the winter.

gotta love the shine that you can put on a formula. probably the best my black has ever looked. one of the many reason's i really miss my boat. :) at least i got to drink a beer on board today. :D

unfortunately, no real updates. the marine surveyor is convinced that the boat lost oil pressure somehow, so last week he had them take apart the oil pump. the pump was fine though, so he asked them to take out the crankshaft. apparently that was a beast of a job because it took all of monday and most of yesterday. now that it's apart, the surveyor needs to take another look to see if something happened in there to cause the oil pump to stop working. if he doesn't see a sheared gear or something, we'll have a real mystery on our hands.

only good news is that the surveyor agreed that we can get started on putting the new engine in as long as he approves of what they're doing based on coverage. i had to wait until bay shore got him a quote though, and we finally got that last night. bad news is that i don't know if anyone is going to help with the replacement cost yet, but we had to make certain that the shop didn't do anything that the insurance company definitely would not cover.

i'm really hoping to get back in the water next week. it's killing me to watch all this awesome weather with no boat. :( surveyor tells me that he'll be making a final diagnosis after he looks at the crankshaft, so hopefully i'll know something today. i'll keep you guys in the loop...

slight update....nothing wrong with the accessory case, so surveyor has no clue as to why oil pressure would have failed. as of now it looks like it didn't in my opinion, but what do i know? ;) that being said, he has no idea why everything failed. he wants to send the crankshaft to a metallurgist to see if there was a defect with it, but he's afraid it's so badly damaged that it will not be possible.

good news is that new engine starts getting installed on wednesday! no idea who's picking up the tab yet, but it has to be done regardless. on a slightly interesting note, jeff at bay shore said that the old engine is so badly damaged that there's hardly anything worth salvaging out of it. kinda crazy if you ask me...i hope to see the whole thing in person later this week. if i do, i'll get some pics to post.

hopefully see some of you on the water soon...

" jeff at bay shore said that the old engine is so badly damaged that there's hardly anything worth salvaging out of it."
WOW! I guess the injectors, fuel system, water pumps, etc have no value. This certainly does not help (Jeff's) credability.

okay, so keep in mind that i don't know much about diesel engines here...

yanmar doesn't make the 6LY2A-STP any more. so, i have to get a rebuilt engine, and that's essentially a core swap out. so, to keep the remaining components it would cost me $2000. according to what they're telling me, things got so hot that multiple components outside of the core got warped, and aren't usable. also, they say that the oil system is compromised after what happened, so they wouldn't recommend keeping it. after that, it becomes a question of whether or not keeping the remaining components is worth the 2 grand.

like i said, they did offer to go over the whole thing with me later this week. jeff said he'll take a look at the individual components and give me a recommendation on whether or not to keep the remaining components like the turbo, alternator, etc. honestly, i don't know what the value of these items are to begin with, so i don't know if the 2k is worth keeping them.

thanks for the help.

somebody picking up the check would be great by me! ;D certainly can't wait to get back on the water though...so i'll take the boat being done by Friday. :)

port side. this was another part of my conversation with jeff. i wanted to see if there was anything that i needed to do to the starboard, and he basically said that there was nothing he could have told me to do to prevent this on the port...so as far as the starboard, just continue the oil changes and regular maintenance. i was half expecting them to want to take it apart to examine it, but they don't feel it's necessary.

If you plan on keeping the boat, You may want to consider future maintenance needs. Water pumps, turbo, injection pump, injectors, fuel lines, head, intercoolers, etc. These parts are not cheap, But you will need to have the parts evaluated by a disinterested party. The marina is in this to make money.. They have a blank check, Its just a question of who is going to pay the bill. I know this doesn't help. But remember 1 thing " keep your eyes wide open"

My biggest worry is "what" caused this and IF it isn't a material failure, I would suspect since you're the 3rd owner, that something possibly from the previous owners from lack of maintenance, abuse, etc. could have caused this and hopefully the other engine isn't going to have these problems.

This is the nightmare with used diesels even with 400+ hours on them.

Gurryman is correct on future maintenance needs.

Glad to hear it's going to be done on Friday.

okay...good news! i stopped by the yard, and whatta ya know. a new engine was sitting in a pickup truck right next to my boat! a few minutes later, they started to load her into the boat...took all of about 10 minutes! they said they would finish most connections today after lining it up, and then start her up tomorrow. any luck i'll be back on board this weekend. ;D

i got some cool pics that i'll post tonight...

That is great news. Good for you! Have you found out yet if anyone is helping you with the costs or are you on your own?

sorry..just getting home. what a long day...but at least it was productive. you know it's bad when you're running out of things to do on the boat. ;)

as of now, i'm still footing the bill. :( i did hear from the insurance surveyor tonight though, and he says they've narrowed it down to a bolt that holds the bearing on to the connecting rod. he says it was either a faulty bolt, or it wasn't torqued correctly when installed. he had a metallurgist with him when he looked at it today, so that guy is going to take it to his lab and give it a good look. i should know definitively tomorrow what happened. then it's a question of who might help me out with the cost...

too tired to post pics...i'll get some up tomorrow.

c ya'll,
todd

okay...here are some pics of the new engine going in...

Nice pics !

Question. Why does your hardtop gelcoat look so much different (color wish) than the rest of the boats gelcoat ??

What kind of warranty comes with the reman engine ?

I would hate to see the total cost, but it's worth it in the end !!!

Enjoy the boating this weekend if all goes well !!!!!!

uh...good q on the hardtop. ;) i've never noticed it in person, so maybe it's something funky with the lighting in that photo. i'll take a better look tomorrow.

i actually thought of the warranty question today. i need to ask them that tomorrow. i'm on for a sea trial tomorrow, so hopefully that goes well, and i'll get to enjoy the weekend.

keep your fingers crossed...
