Programing ECU

Does know the procedure to program my 2005 496 HO? Apparently these engines are programmed by default from the factory as starboard engines and now that that I can view the Smartcraft data, I need to program the port engine (as port engine) to display the data from that engine correctly. I have a friend who has the software but he admitted he got it recently and hasn't used it much. Is the process pretty straight forward?

The 496 uses the 555 ECM or PCM (depends on serial number) and they cannot be reprogramed due to password protected.

There is a guy on OSO which had similar issues and got around it by another means but don't remember right now how. I'll try to look, but might be easier to post your question there and they can fill in the blanks

Great, guess I over thought your issue other then just change the location (what you said not what I read) :) , was thinking you wanted to reprogram the PCM

I am going to run into the same issue today once I install the last harness on my vesselview mobile module that just showed up in the mail.

From what I am reading it has to be a Mercury Service Tech with software and cable to reprogram the CityId of the port motor to a "port" engine.

If you find another way let me know and I will do the same.

Yeah my title is probably a little misleading.

Will40, thanks for the link. My marina said they could do it (I would think most can) but if I can do myself all the better. I'll let you know what happens.

Had the Port engine ID programming done today. Took less than 10 minutes for the tech to do. $60. I'm not complaining. Works sweet.

Good luck
