Raw Water Impellor Change

Raw water impellers should be changed every year on diesels because of how critical the cooling is to engine durability. I just changed the impellers on my Volvo TAMD 74's. Holy Mother of God, the starboard was almost impossible. Took me 6 hours of chest crushing labor lying on top of the engine stretching my arm down where I couldn't see to replace the impeller. I ended up modifying a Jabsco puller to get the job done. I can't imagine doing the job on an emergency basis at sea. Anybody been there before? Got any hints?

Hi. I used to sign in as srodd but my account disappeared for some reason...

Anyway. The impeller is located on the right side of the engine below the alternator. Reading your other post keepr, this is not a job for the inexperienced. It is a PITA. especially on the right engine. You have to lie on top of the engine and do it mostly by feel with your right hand. It took me 8 hours and my chest hurt for two days afterwards. I was a tech for many years and I used to teach auto mechanics and I'm not looking forward to doing it again. Pay some other poor bast%rd to do it for you.

wow, i'm surprised. these are 40+ pc's with v-drives? i guess the diesels take up a lot more room than my 502's. my 34 pc has room to crawl around to the front of the motors via the port side between the holding tank and the engine. last weekend i removed both water/fuel pump assemblies and replaced the impellers, replaced the starboard alternator and replaced all the belts. i had all the parts when i started and it took me about 2 1/2 hours to do both motors including clean up. i like to do all my own maintenance and if access is an issue i may need to rethink a newer 40 or 41 pc. oh well, that's at least a few years away anyway :(

I had a 36 PC with the 502's which were ez to work on. The 6 cylinder Volvos are a little bigger. Access is pretty good except outboard of the engines is a little tight.
