Raw water pump rebuild.

I always thought that replacing the impeller on a raw water pump, (bravo 3), every 2 or 3 years was the requisite maintenance. Now I'm being told that I should also be changing out the shaft seals, and possibly the whole drive shaft assembly. What does everyone else do?

Just talking about the piece which holds the the water pump
There are 2 styles, ones with and without the mechanical low pressure pump.

Ones with the pump mounted, just check the lube every year and keep going.

Yours is without and have 2 options, fresh and salt water
Fresh is next to no issue, I would just inspect what doing the impeller and determine if the seal needs replaced but would be many years

Salt needs more inspection and may need the outer seal every 2 to 3 changes. Look for cracks and hard spots. Only reason to change things out is if you can see an issue

Just my opinion and how I do things

I change the pump every 2 years, and every other change I look at the front bearings and seals. They seem to need replacing every 4 years based on my experience. It's not a hard job to do. The seal retainers rust and fail, then the seals fail...luckily there are two seals in there so when the first fails water seeps out a weep hole and buys a lot of time. If they are unknown condition, just order up the bearings and seals.
