Replacing rusted anchor chain - advice? Suggestions?

Anchor chain had been neglected and abused by prior owners of my ‘04 40pc. I am installing an anchor wash down to keep it from happening again. Original is galvanized and I had to cut off 50’ when I first bought the boat. Now I am looking for advice on replacing the whole thing, but 200’ of galvanized could run $3k! What are your thoughts on maybe 50‘ of chain and 150’ of rode? I cruise and anchor in bays usually less then 20’, rarely over 15 knots.

I prefer all chain. Attached is a link that I have purchased chain for many boats. They have what you need in galvanized at a great price. It comes delivered in a cardboard drum mounted to a skid. Ensure you are ordering the correct size and check with your windlass owners manual to make sure what chain link it accepts.

I like all chain my self, just holds way better.
Will say with 50 ft of chain the anchor will bite and hold, the issue will be if your windless can operate with the mix with rode

Another thought
When I fist got my 27PC it came with 70ft of chain. I'm in a lake that average anchor depth was 60ft, so not good. I want to find 125 to 150ft and no one sold that length. All wanted to sell at least 200ft, so I did buy 200 and the rest went to making 20ft chain or so with hooks for lashing things down

just a thought. That’s a lot of weight up in the bow. Not having the 200’ of chain may make a slight difference in planing/ride.

I completely replaced all of my chain (200') a couple of years ago because a good portion of it had a fair bit of corrosion. I bought from a place in Indiana called MarineNow. Price was $400 and it was excellent quality - G43 stamped on the links and nicely galvanized.

Thanks for the advice. So all chain it is. Scott at Formula TAG gave me the original chain info -its Acco brand HT 1/4” galvanized. Now I’m trying to find a place that will sell me 200’ as it comes in a barrel of 400’. Approximately $3000 vs. $1500.
Is all high tensil chain created equal? If other brands show the same 2600 lb working weight limit, does it pay to go with Acco?

I’m sure you’re already thinking of this, but before you lug and stow all of that shiny new chain up into your locker, be sure to Rub Your Balls With Grease using paint, colored zip ties, or some other markings.

Before adding a chain counter I laid the chain out on gravel and painted a 2ft section every 25ft with different colors

Kimo, not sure if everyone understands your quote so I figured I would help. Red, yellow, blue, white, and green paint or markings is what you put on the chain to identify how many feet is out.

Thanks GSENT

My counter went out so I did the same with different colors of paint. To help me remember I went with Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Purple. ROY-G-BIV. I actually remembered the color spectrum from high school. Couldn't find Indigo by the way.:D

Ha! Thanks for the clarification. Yes, we marked the last chain with zip ties. Didn’t last too long, so we will probably paint the new one. I have an email into Peerless, which makes or at least distributes the Acco brand. The product number I got from TAG is not listed on their site, so I’m hoping to find it’s just another product number and not discontinued.

@Kismet - as @AllDodge said, Google is your friend. Search for 1/4 G43 chain and you should get lots of results. No need to necessarily get the part number that TAG provided. And there are also several vendors that are significantly cheaper than sailorsams for the same quality chain.

Just a follow up - I bought 200’ Peerless G43 1/4” from Defender. Not cheap at $5.65/ft, but I am a big believer in do it once, do it right. Painted every 25’ and installed a washdown in the anchor locker. Thanks for your advice and suggestions. BTW, I’m going to post a request for suggestions on a canvas/sunbrella sun shade (not permanent) in the general discussions forum, but if anyone has done this, I’d love to know what you did.
