reupholstering

Since I can't get the boat out I decided to go ahead and replace the vinyl. I want to do do the seats back in the original colors. The boat is in the Palm Beach scheme. I emailed Formula yesterday to see if the material was still available. If not does anybody know of another source that may have the proper colors vinyl? I've taken the front seats and the side panels out and I still have to take the back seat out and the side bolsters. I'm also thinking about redoing the instrument and switch panels, but this won't get started until I see what the uphosltery will cost.

Back in 2000 I called Formula about my (Palm Beach)vinyls. They took my HIN # and told me exactly what I needed and colors. They would not sell it to me but said to have my upholstery shop call and they will sell it to them. Cost around $600. but what I got was light teal , dark teal , magenta , black and white. they sent enough to do the entire cockpit+.

Mopower, sounds like the same colors I have. I'll see what Formula support says. I checked a few websites yesterday and I did find similar colors, but couldn't find a brand that had all of them. One brand may have had two colors and another the remainder. I would like to have every thing from one mfr. so that the patterns will match.

Good luck with your project and search. Tell me what you find if you can.

I talked to someone at Formula last year (forget the name) and they only had white that I could get. I wanted the Palm Beach vinyl for my LS and so far have had no luck. I got a swatch and was able to match very close (you know, horse shoes) and when I tried to purchase two of the colors had been discontinued. I have not renewed my efforts since I focused on the engines but I hope you can find something and let me know too. Matching colors is one part and getting a heavy face weight material is yet another. I have almost given up and thought about changing the colors of the entire boat just to make something match. That or all white, but that is to boreing.

Good luck and post progress.

I had your same approach but I was looking at the original vinyl and the grain is different in almost every color. I thought maybe work had been done but in areas that is was obvious work had not been done the grain was the same as the matching color. That is what made me give up on making the grain the same because mine never was. If it is possible I would like to do that though

Aquaforce, I did find some sites that I can get swatches and from What you say this is what I may have to do. The next problem will be finding a good shop to do the work for me. My black vinyl is ok so I won't have to change that. I want to do the seats the same as they are now since I like the pattern. The only thing I want to change is the engine cover. I'm going to borrow a page from Cuda's notebook and put a bird on it. I'm probably going to pull the back seat and side bolsters out tomorrow. I'm taking some pictures along the way so that I have a record of the project. Man, this lake being down is really gonna cost me a lot of $$$$!

I got an email back from Formula and there is no longer any Palm Beach vinyl available. So now the search is on.

Keep me posted on progress if you will. I would like to get the teal, seafoam and pink colors especially. I already bought some black and white but these other colors I struck out on.
When I open my engine cover vinyl I am thinking to go back with closed cell foam. Better support and more supple material not to mention it won't wick up water.

In my online search yesterday I think I may have found some material, but I would like to get some swatches to see how close the colors actually are. I want to replace the plywood on the engine hatch with something that will not absorb moisture, something like starboard maybe. I have had it off one time and it is extremely heavy. I lifted it off with my shop crane.

Thanks a lot for that info.
I will check it out also. Hopefully it is a good hit. At minimum I need to do the engine cover and back seat. Ideally I would like to just do it all. Will have to see how some things go here. :)

Is your cover all wood?

My cushions are attached to wood and the wood is mounted on a formed fiberglass chassis.

Your engine cover is the same as mine. I think the plywood 1/2", but am not sure. I do know that it is not light. I think I might change the hinges on mine too. The existing ones are on the sides of the hatch cover and don't seem to be too substantial. Could be because the wood has rotted and the screws have come loose.

I had help getting my engine cover off. It is deffinately heavy. The fiberglass seems to be the biggest part of the weight. At first I thought that the wood might be water logged but when we took some of the individuall strips out of the assembley that was not the case. That fiberglass is just HEAVY ;D ;D

Your crane is a good way to lift that thing. I got several hands on deck ;D

I went over to the shop that is probably going to do my my work and was able to pretty well match the "Palm Beach" colors and they are all from the same mfr. It will be at least 3 weeks before they can start on it. Right now I'm a pretty happy camper. All I have to do now is finish up some of the other things I'm doing on the boat.

Can your shop send me some swatches?
Would they sell material to me? Or if you can tell me the mfgr and codes maybe I could get it too.
I really have to get it while the getting is good and before it runs out ;D ;D

I'll try to get the material mfr. and product numbers for you. I can see no reason why they wouldn't sell to you unless they consider it a hassle they don't want to fool with. You may be able to get a local shop to get the vinyl for you.

I got the swatches in from Denver and they were all to dark. On the computer screen they looked close. I'll try to get over to the shop I'm dealing with in the next couple of days and get the info on the material I looked at.

Aquaforce, here is what I was able to come up with. The colors are close matches, but not exact.
For the rose color I am Using Tradewinds Plus TRS 6644 "Monte Carlo", For the teal and the light blue I am going to use Winsong Marine Vinyl WIS 733 "Teal Waters" and WIS 702 "Aqua Spray". The white and black should be no problem finding. I hope this will help you out in your search. here is a link to for the Winsong vinyl. Didn't find anything on the Tradewinds.
