Rubber backing flaking off on Cockpit Carpet (Formula needs your Input)

I need everyone's help. I have an issue with my rubber backing flaking off like pepper on my cockpit carpet on my 2012 40PC after only six months. I also had the same issue on my 2008 34PC after 3 years. The problem is I brought this up to Formula and they called the carpet manufacturer. The response was that this seems to be an isolated incident because they never get complaints of this nature. They seem to not remember my complaint two years ago on my 34PC. They also said that I must be using harsh chemicals on my carpet and/or floor to cause this damage. Formula is trying to do what they can and suggested that I reach out to my Formula friends to see if anyone has experienced the same issue. If so, please, please come forward and email Craig Brown at Formula Boats. cbrown@formulaboats.com. Please let me know if you do so so I can follow up. This is very important because as of now this manufacturer is not standing behind their product. I can't be the only one experiencing this. I really appreciate any help.

I had exactly the same issue. See the thread in this forum entitled "Exterior Carpet Pads for 34PC" which I started in September, 2011. The rubber backing to the snap-in carpet pads in my 2008 34PC deteriorated after 4 seasons. As indicated in the thread, I obtained a replacement set of snap-in carpet pads from a manufacturer on the west coast. The replacements, in my opinion, are far superior to the original set that came with the boat.

If I remember correctly, someone even took rubber undercoating and sprayed it on the back of the carpet to keep this from happening.
Sorry I cannot help as my carpet is still new in the plastic, waiting for the next guy. I like the naked look in the cockpit.

Yep same issue, after 1 Year the carpet is unusable...looks pretty day 1, but the backing quickly gets destroyed.

Mine went too..and I only had it down in the winter.[maybe 3 months] .now never. Just have small mats. Got tired of putting rubber backing on it...once was replaced by a manufacturer of welcome mats [forget the name now] wont repair even though the carpet is good. One forum member suggested a Home Depot product to spray rubber on tools. It seems better. I am trying it on my small mats that i have for stepping into the cockpit. Have repaired & for the next owner.

Those little flakes are awful to completely remove. Never thought to complain to Formula. Not having a dealer anywhere near and not knowing of this forum until recently we just tried solving all issues.

For what Formula charges for their boats, they should use carpet backed with Nuwave PVC and not black rubber. Mine started to fall apart after about 3 years. Most boat manufacturers use the black rubber backed carpet.
The PVC costs more, but isn't that why you bought a Formula?

Check out the vendor on here Corinthian carpet. They have pretty much every formula cockpit template on file and they have the PVC backing. I bought my 292 with an after market carpet. PVC backing still looks brand new and I'm going on season 6. My dad had the same issue with the backing dry rotting basically on his 31pc. Replaced it with a Corinthian Carpet that they had on special. The new carpet actually looks better then the Berber the boat came with.

Same here 34 PC. after about 4 years got the pepper affect. Wife was tired of vaccuming everyday on the boat. did the undercoat trick. did not work out so well for me. Just ordered new carpet the other day.

Carpet still looks great, however the pepper had to go. Need a new backing material!

Same here. The carpet on my 2007 only lasted 4 years. The "factory" installed carpet backing does not live up to Formula's marketing of a "Formula fit and finish" for sure. It is lousy.....

That said, I made templates and sent them to Corinthian Marine Carpet who was running a 20% off sale.

The backing is completely different and after 3 years looks like the day that it was shipped to me.

They will send you free samples to look and I since they charge by the length of the roll used you can generally get a couple of boarding mats (18" x 24") made and included in the order at no extra charge.

Not sure why Formula doesn't contract out to a company like Corinthian based on the lousy history with their black rubber-backed "factory" installed carpets.

Corinthian Marine can be contacted at : "AquaMat" by Corinthian Marine (www.corinthian-marine-carpet.com) for more info or call 1-866-785-6507 ex 500

I have a feeling that perhaps Formula was fibbing a little when they spoke with BuddyB and told him that they have not heard anything about this issue.

I have not had this problem with my 2007, with the exception of an area right next to the cockpit entry door. Problems that occurred in that area were my own fault I suppose, as I used to roll that portion of the carpet forward when I was away from the boat. I did this to keep rain water that leaked in during hard rains (by the aft canvas port side curtain top corner) from regularly saturating the carpet at the entry. Where I flipped the carpet over, the backing was exposed to direct sun, and it obviously didn't like it. I resolved that issue though.

On a related note, it is my understanding that when Formula went from the Berber Carpet look to the Striped Carpet look, they changed vendors. I believe that was in model year 2009 or 2010, and it is supposed to be a better quality backing. I have this set now, and the backing is definitely different.

And for goodness sake, have y'all given Formula the feedback? I can only imagine they would like to know.

I spoke with Formula about it, and I think it's a safe bet that they watch this forum.

On my 2005 370ss, same issue. The black rubber is flaking off. I bought the boat in early 2007 with 30 hours, so I am basically the main owner of it. Boat was used very, very little between 2009 and July of 2013, maybe 5 total days of use in that time and it has always been stored in a garage.

The rubber started flaking in 2008 on mine, and when I took it out to clean the carpet, I rolled it in a loose roll and the back became a huge mess. Never even tried to clean it after seeing how bad it was, just considered it to be a loss.
