Safe Mode

Hi All....Happy Holidays!

Strange holidays for sure but hopefully we can all pull it together and enjoy what we have!

Anyone out there have an engine or, engines going into safe/limp mode? I have the Volvo Penta TAMD74 P-B engines. I know I have posted about this before but, making the assumption we have new forum members from time to time and we all could get some fresh insight.

I have owned my boat for 16 years and never had an engine go into safe mode. This started last March with the installation of the SPM kit which was issued by Volvo Penta to stop these engines from engaging into gear while in neutral. The starboard engine has been the one which has been doing this since I bought this boat, which was only 1 1/2 years old at the time. No one could ever find resolution until I found Eagle Marine in Delray Beach FL. They are the VP shop which found the SPM Kit issued in 2015....not one other shop which Volvo Penta sent to my boat, knew about this part, apparently.

So, the SPM Kit seems to have resolved this original problem but now, the SB engine goes into safe mode about 15 to 30 minutes out. I get the potentiometer code, which we know it can't be as both potentiometers are new in July. I shut down both engines....clear the code....restart and all is fine for the rest of the boating day....very weird! As this never happened until the SPM Kit was installed, I am directing my frustration at it however, it could be coincidental.

Anyone?

Even though the pots were changed out I would still inspect the mounting of the pot in question and do a ohm's sweep test with an analog meter.
If it passes the sweep test I would switch the pots from engine to engine. Then you will know for sure if the problem follows to the other motor.
If the output shaft is binding on the input of the pot it will cause the pot to fault because it gets loaded. That may have been damaged by the mechanic. You never now, I ld revisit that pot install.
