Satellite TV

I will be setting up my Satellite TV system this spring and using the KVH dome and a mounted dish at my dock as my boat is undercover so the dome cannot see the sky from the dock. Fortunately the boat has a built in AB switch so I can change from dome to dish easily.

Now the real question which is better in a marine environment Dish TV or Direct TV? I know that my KVH 3 dome will will not supply HD signals with Direct but it will be with Dish. Since I will mostly watch tv at the dock when I'm on the dock system I'm not sure it bothers me that much. I am curious about the connectivity and the quality of each system.

Does anyone have an opinion on the good and bad or each system?

Hehe, well I ended up subscribing to Dish and the receiver in the boat was bad. So, replaced the Wally and it works, sorta.

Dish is month to month. Either pay the bill when it comes or they shut you off. Works for us northerner’s when we are only in the water for 6 months or so.

Did have to wait a long time for the KVH3 to find signal sometimes even at the dock, but once locked in it worked pretty good.

I’d take some advice or tips on that too.

We use apple tv. I have them on both TV's in the boat as well as in our motorhome. Roku would also work. Most marinas have adequate wifi for watching TV. If not we stream through our I Phones. I use Visible, Its cheap and has no data caps or speed limiting. My wife can watch in the rear cabin on her Phone WiFi and I can watch something else on the salon TV on my WiFi streaming. The Apple tv will allow screen mirroring also. Most of the time we watch Discovery or fox news, all available on Appletv. Were almost always within a cell signal or a wifi signal. I really really dont like dish or direct. This is a workaround that has worked for us....

I went with DISH because it does not require a contract. I go to month month and let it lapse in the fall since I'm up North and the boat comes out of the water. The Wally works good and attaching an inexpensive USB drive gives you a DVR. As of last summer neither did HD but KVH said that might be changing soon. Just be certain there was a SAT upgrade and you really can receive HD now on DISH. The only other difference is programming. I believe there are some sports channels that have exclusive with DIRECT TV so if sports is important then go DIRECT.

We have decided to go with Direct TV I really wanted the Dish TV it is real HD on the water with the KVH TV3 dome. But my boat is docked undercover so I have to have a separate dish on the dock and use the A/B switch to change from the dock dish to the dome. My electronics guy said that with Dish I would have to make adjustments to the settings on each TV every time I left the dock and then again when I came back so it is just easier for me to use Direct TV as I will not have to go through that process. Since we use the boat all season we will not really need to cancel the subscription due to lack of use. Thanks for everyone helping me with this decision.

Internet option.

Become a member of the Calyx Institute and get a truly unlimited bandwidth mobile hotspot.
Uses the t-Mobile, Sprint network 4g/5g hotspot, roughly $500 a year for unlimited data access.

We installed all new TVs and Roku's and now only use internet-enabled TV services.
