Roy, Myself, Arctek Jim, and Roy's friend Bob headed out on Roy's boat yesterday sharking.

Left Mystic just before sunrise, hit sunrise just before Nyman's. What a nice morning! Fueled up, grabbed the rest of what we needed for bait, etc, and harassed Chris a little.

Heading out to get some fresh bait, we spun a hub east of Fisher's. This is Roy's favorite place to spin hubs, he always tries to go to the same spot to spin them LOL That's another story, but after Jim and Roy had some "quiet time" involving Roy bent over/sprawled out on the motor and Jim trying to undo Roy's belt, etc, Roy swapped the prop out to his spare.

The spare slowed us down a bit, but got the job done! We headed out, a little late, tried to get some fresh bait, but being pressed for time, and the sun up strong now, it was going to be tough. Didn't even mark anything. Saw a couple blues come in on one boat (a very good Charter Boat) and that was it. We decided we'd go with what we had, knowing we had a slower ride, it was going to take longer to get there, and get back, so we needed to head out.

Nice ride out, we found the right conditions at the spot we wanted. Water color was pretty good (noticeably better than the grounds we crossed on the way out.) Water temp came up to what we expected (~66.5-67 on Roy's temp gauge, which matched my Oceantemp chart). Shearwaters everywhere. Structure we knew already LOL

Started the slick, got some rods out, and waited and observed, as we kept up chumming.

About an hour in, I see a tail tip, and as I watched, a Mako lept twice near our 60' balloon....short leaps, but aggressive. Looked to be between 125-150#. A few seconds later, the red balloon takes off away from the starboard stern corner. I grab the rod and let him run with it. Peels line for a while, then slows down. As I let him eat (or so I thought), he soon runs again. Then I lock down on him and he's on good (supposedly). A few minutes into it, I start feeling "pops" in the line, then he's gone.

Pulled the line in, and there was a good deal of chafe along the line up about 30' from the sinker/leader. Apparently he had become tangled in the line and never took the bait. The bait didn't have one mark on it. It was 60' down, he may have been diving for it, but got wrapped in the line on the way down.

That sucked, but there was nothing you could do.

After that, we caught & tagged 3 Blue Sharks, 1 250#+, one about 200-225#, and one little 50#er. No more action after that.

Great weather all day, with a nice 10 kt breeze. Started blowing just before we left to head in, and had a GOOD stiff 15-20 kts easy coming in, which steadily increased all the way in to 25 kts or damn close to it. No big deal. Typical summer weather here.

Fueled up again at Nyman’s, then cleaned up and unpacked the boat at the dock and headed to VooDoo Grill for dinner.

I’m sure we all slept like rocks last night, I know I did, it was a very long day, 21 hours for me LOL.
