Shore power electrical information

Alldodge,
Per your request, I will start a new thread concerning shore power information.

There are a couple of different setups on most boats. There could be exceptions but for this conversation, this is the industry standard.

First, the standard 30 amp single inlet is the most common on the smaller boats which consists of 120 volt power to the main panel. One hot, one neutral, and one ground, usually #10 gauge wire. Your boat will have one main breaker providing overcurrent protection. This is usually used when there is a small need for electricity like boats without a/c.

Second, there are two 30 amp single inlets supplying two 120 volt circuits to the main panel. Each outlet has its own shore power cord and is exactly the same as the single outlet but doubled for more capacity. This also uses #10 gauge wire. Your panel should have two main breakers providing overcurrent protection.

On the larger Formulas, there is 50 amp shore power which consists of 50 amp service at 250 volt power supplied to the main panel. One cord assembly would supply the boat. This gives the manufacturers more choices on the equipment and a good example of this is 220 volt equipment like a/c units, ranges, etc. It is still considered single phase power but higher voltage. The outlet is fed with two hots, one neutral, and one ground wire, usually #6 gauge wire. There should be one main two pole breaker providing overcurrent protection.

There is also a 50 amp 125 volt system but I have not seen it used on Formula Boats. Other manufacturers use it and it consists of one hot, one neutral, and one ground utilizing #6 gauge wire. There should be one main 50 amp breaker providing overcurrent protection.

Three phase power is used on very large vessels and not relevant to Formula boats so we will not discuss it.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for the post to clarify, the other phase is what caused me to question.

I do understand how power works, it was just the phase word used. If it was something like two 120V legs or other term, I would not have asked

All the best

great timing, I am looking to replace the plug on my 2004 47Y, it has the single 50amp 250 volt setup, any ides on the part number?
