Sister has a 52 something footer yacht and has been trying to sell it for a few years. Its has always been in fresh water but she has had enough and plans to move to the gulf. She means well but doesn't (I think) fully understand what she is going to get into moving to salt water. Having the hull cleaned, hull out every few years and other things.

So I'm thinking about helping her sail it down the Cumberland to Tenn Tom to Mobile. Getting down ther should not be a large issue, I know aids to Nav and can read charts. The issues, is what will she be in for once down in salt other then tides and knowing where to go when Hurricane's come in?

She is a big one that's for sure. Think she said it was a Jefferson but not real sure. Has V8 Detroit diesels and drafts about 4 feet

She'll need a bottom job, of course. Typically a different material is used for salt/brackish vs fresh. I can't speak to SV, but for MV, there's usually need to haul the boat at least yearly to fix something anyway.

Talked to her more last night, and plans to have it hauled out in Pickwick on the way down and get the bottom done. Wants to keep it in fresh water maybe in the Mobile area and only going into the salt every now and then

Unless hauled out from fresh to salt, there is no keeping in fresh and out to the salt. Here in Houston, Galveston Bay is brackish. Rain from Texas comes into the bay, salt from the Gulf comes in ...
