 Found out what caused the transom rot. The 2 anodes on the bottom of the gimbal mount. During the brake down of the outdrive, and mountings. We noticed that my anodes were'nt decaying. NOT GOOD! When we tried to remove them, the bolts broke. And when removed they were both eat'en down to a point. Electro Corrosive Transfer. In short,Less than $10.00 worth of improperly in stalled parts by persons unknown, cost me 2 grand in repairs. Check those anodes Guys don't forget about them like I did.

Yea it is.But I'll Bet anyone dollars against pesos, that it won't happen again! The guy doing the refit, has been in the boat fixing game for 50 year's. Mr. Bill Beatty, Owner of The Fiberglass Shop in Denham Springs, Louisiana. He's forgotten more about transom repair than I could ever learn. The only way he would agree to do the job,was that I had to agree to let him refit the engine mounts also. Because he tie's them into the transom, and basicly give's double support to engine and transom. So this for sure ani't his first rodeo. We'll be good to go next summer.

I beleive that I have those on my #1 drive. Are they round and look like they fit on top of what would be bolts? How do they come off and how are the new ones held on?

The anonde is molded to the bolt itself. They are located at the bottom left and right of the gimbal mount plate in the engine compartment. If you can get a3/4 wrench or socket in there, very tight,. Try to lossen the nuts. If you hear a sound like a rubber band popping, the bolt has broken. DON'T try to use pliers on the anode's they have a bite washer made onto the bolt's. I hope that help's you out OLD BOAT CRAZY. And I also hope that it's a wild goose chase. And that you don't have any transom problem's,you and everyone else.

That entire bolt is an anode

I don't like that design at all and looking at late models those anodes in that location don't exist!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So the light bulb went on in my head and when I replaced my drive and transom asbly those bolts did not go in!!!
I got two stainless steel bolts of the same dimension and locked them to speck with lots of sealer! No more anodes there. Stupid location that is very vulnerable to water compromise. Since there are both anodes and mercathodes on my 242 there is pleanty of protection and those old design over priced bolts are gone in my boat.

Hope all goes well with your work ;)

Use a centerpunch to push the broken bolt through. It's steel so a magnet rod should fish it out. Replace with S&S or Brass nut&bolt. There are several type of anoeds that can be used to replace these time bombs. You will have to get with a marine tech for grounding them right.
