spare props?

Do many of you carry a spare set props?
I snapped a shaft last Friday and had a bear finding a replacement prop.
New ones for a 2005 40PC (Yanmar 440s/2" tapered end shaft/ZF FPS 23"x32.4 pitch 0.90 DAR Nibral)
7 weeks or 10 weeks or season ending weeks. $3000 each plus expedited shipping
It looks like I may have lucked out and found one used to get me back in sooner rather then later.

Anybody else snap a shaft on a submerged object or otherwise? Two inches isn't what it used to be I guess ;)
I could also use a recommendation on a good source for all things prop & shaft related

Just happened to me on 7/19 in NY Harbor. I was up at Liberty Landing marina in NYC. I hit a big dead wood and I have IPS drives. 4 new props and two shafts bent. I was able to salvage 3 of the 4 and just picked up the recons today. $1,000 for 3 reconditioned props and $4,800 for the 4 new ones. Ouch. Here's pics of old and new. I had them overnighted from Volvo and I was hauled on 7/22 and floating on 7/26 at noon. Bottom line, I will always have spare props from now on.

i can't help you but you've definitely caused some concerns for me. i think i'll start keeping my eyes open for a spare set of props and maybe a shaft too.

a couple points on this as i've gotten quite good at hitting things, and having to get props swapped.

i now have 4 complete sets of IPS props (2 on the boat, and 2 in storage at any time). i picked up new T3 IPS props for about $2300 from boatownersworld.com. if you google, you can find them for about the same from deepblueyachtsupply.com as well. having spares is great for long trips, or for short hauls to swap props and get back on the water.

i use Black Dog Propellers on Kent Island in Maryland for my prop reconditioning. they use PropScan which is a computer based measurement tool to make certain the props are perfectly re-done. i can't possibly say enough good stuff about these guys. they are about $500 per set to recondition, but it's totally worth it. and they usually do it in about 2 days...though i once got them to do it while i went to lunch. :D if you're in the area, or don't mind paying for shipping, they're awesome to use.

good luck,
twarble

My 40 PC uses T-6's and I keep a spare set on the boat now. S7S Propeller in NY reconditioned three out of the 4. They are brand new now. $800 for the three props. The new T-6's were $2300 but insurance paid.
