Transmission delay in reverse

Hello all, went out today for a nice ride and boat performed flawlessly. 2002 41pc with Tamd74p and ZF280A1
transmissions. I have separate controls for transmission and throttles. Came back in and tried to dock. Seemed like I lost the port reverse but took a long time to engage. When I finally got in the slip I tried the tranny multiple times. No issues with forward gear but reverse has a long but variable delay. Where do I begin to troubleshoot this issue. Unfortunately it got late and dark so can?t check tranny fluid till tomorrow. Thanks.

Man oh man Jlazzfp....have you had your trannys rebuilt? As you know I had the port tranny rebuilt in 2016, for just this problem but, it was forward. It started with a slight hesitation and then ended with port not engaging into forward at all after about 1 year. Boat was on the hard for 6 weeks...port tranny craned out and I took it myself to ZF in Miramar. They had it one week and guess what....when I took delivery, launched her and brought her home...the damn port tranny was hesitating again. Can you imagine how I felt after all that time and money???? The mechanic at the time came to my dock and flushed out...I have no clue...the solenoid....with mineral spirits. AND...GUESS WHAT NOW??? There is a hole in the gear box cooler for port and just yesterday, my new mechanic (Eagle Marine) sent me a video of oil squirting from the hole all over the engine room so, hole is new or else the engine room would be a greasy mess. He found tons of metal shavings which he says are from the rebuild. Is it that these guys or, some of them, do not do their jobs correctly....don't finish them...what? So now, I have to replace the cooler for $2,900!!!! Mechanic said that rust created the hole.

I am sure you have had the solenoids cleaned. That is what I did every time I felt any hesitation. Did you see the PM I sent you asking for your mechanics phone number. My guy wants to ask about the EDC drilling as he and I have never heard of it.

So I cleaned all the contacts at the transmission solenoids and seems to be ok at this time. But then the port side tranny won’t come out of gear and have to shift the transmission past neutral for it to engage. That’s hair raising trying to dock around the marina! Going to clean the harnesses under the dashboard this week. Gotta be electrical somewhere. A new to the dock 41 pc came in the other day. He just bought the boat. It originally had split transmission and throttle handles like mine now it was changed to the single lever shifters. I wonder why? He’s trying to find out.

Today I had the solenoids on the port transmission due to delayed forward and it was dirty and after cleaning it Forward worked great. I have only owned her for 2 1/2 years so at the beginning of this season we serviced the transmissions - the oil that came out definitely was not 30W and at that time we also pulled the solenoids at that time and they were both clean, so now after a very unused season left the dock only 30 times how could the solenoid screen get clogged?? I mean in the first
year and half and 200 hours the solenoids came out clean and now after only 60 hours it comes out clogged.
