turbo chargers

Your saying that the company that has all your parts will not install a turbo which you can buy from another company Florida? They want $8K to do everything including parts?

Yep...I can get it for $2,175 from the place in north Florida. The shop working on my boat which, is a VP partner shop, is charging me $2,895. So, even though this is a new turbo from the other company, the VP shop will not install it unless I buy it from them. One of the expensive parts within this $8,000 bill, is the "exhaust pipe elbow" which is $1,360.26 and the "hose connector" for $207.27. I wonder is the exhaust pipe elbow is the exhaust housing he is referring to? Here is our conversation:

ME: Ithink the cost of this repair is too high. This repair should not cost$8,000…turbochargers are not complicated and so I will have to save money onparts. I have researched the new turbo and cross referenced the KKK partwith the Volvo Penta part and know that I can save around $1,000 by having thenew turbocharger delivered at no shipping cost to me, replete with new wastegate in 2 to 3 days. I know everyone wants to and tries their best tomake money but, not anticipating or expecting this to be an $8,000 repair, Ineed to be proactive and save money where I can. So, I want to review theparts list to see where I can supply them at a cost savings to me.

HIM:
To be clear;

There is a considerable amount of damage to the turbine housing caused by theexhaust riser, this is our reasoning for replacing it.

I'm not prepared toinstall your parts sourced from elsewhere if this is what you're requesting.
The compressor wheelis not available and the exhaust housing is heavily corroded, this is also notavailable as a spare part, on comes with a new unit.

They should be providing a written guarantee, so if does not fix the issue, or if it breaks again within a certain time, they will fix at their cost. Still their looking to make more money, and if their labor rate was not so high I would give them the benefit of the doubt. Now they are also saying this is a brand new and not rebuilt item. Therefore you want to see the receipt with serial number for the part so you can verify with VP (they won't show the price probably).

Another option is to go get your parts and give them to someone else to install, as you say this is not difficult. Without that, your stuck and the only recourse is to let others know, just no slander, just they are sky high.

Ok, thanks for the tips. You are right...I need to make sure everything is brand new and not rebuilt however, as the compressor wheel and exhaust housing are not available as spare parts I do not know how it could be rebuilt, right? And, if I buy the parts myself and find another installer, I am going to owe them $1,000+ for labor already performed....they "got me"!

Anybody out there know for sure that what this shop is telling me is true...that the compressor wheel and exhaust housing are not available as spare parts?

What it sounds to me is they are talking about the turbo parts. If this is correct then I'll say maybe yes, maybe no, but (here is the but) if they are talking about the turbo assembly, then they are correct and those parts of the turbo are not sold separately. Yet another but.... but you can buy a complete rebuilt turbo right now at the link I posted above, along with the one you found.

I'll say the compressor wheel is the turbine wheel which is part of the turbo charger. Now if the exhaust housing is the outer casing of the turbo and not a separate piece, then they are just talking about a turbo assembly. Those two items are 95% of the full out turbo. Only things left is bearings, oil tube, shims and some nuts

But, they won't install anything they don't provide so I am kinda up the creek without a paddle. If I buy a rebuilt turbo (and, is there a rebuilt Volvo Penta 3802139?), then I have to hire someone to install it and pay this shop $$$ for labor already performed.

Does anyone know how to cross reference the Volvo Penta part numbers? The used waste gate which did nothing for the turbocharger problem, is now at the shop and the only number the technician sees on the waste gate is 58061128080 which could be the KKK part number. Before I contact the guy I fired and who installed this waste gate, incorrectly I might add, to get my money back, I need to find out if this number relates to the VP part number 3829368.

Yes/No, part number 3829368 is the wastegate valve kit but shows it for turbo used on TAMD74 models, yours is a 41 model as I remember. Here is the link to that part number lookup and their links. If you click on the links it will show you the exploded view of it

That said I do see it as the same turbo for your motor because the part number is the same. Here is the complete exploded view item 34

Yes, I looked at this but the 58061128080 number is all the technician can see on the actual waste gate so, I need to know if that is the manufacturer's model number and if in fact it is the Volvo Penta model number 3829368.

Ok All....Volvo Penta customer support researched the wastegate with the number 58061128080 which the tech from hell installed on my boat in an attempt to fix the turbocharger, and of which is now down at the shop who is replacing my turbocharger which, comes with a new wastegate, only to come back with the fact that it does not cross reference with any Volvo Penta model number. So, unless the shop gave me an incorrect number off this wastegate, I have a part which I was hoping to sell on eBay and I have no clue what or where it is or who manufactured it. The weird thing is that the correct wastegate VP model is 3802139 with the cross reference number of 58061100364 from the manufacturer. So, we got the 580611 sequence going on.

So the VP tech can go from 3802139 and get Manf number 58061100364, but cannot go from the other number 58061128080 to any VP part number?

If this is correct can they provide the manufactures name and/or location so somebody can call the manufacture?

VP customer service said they had no correlating VP part number for that 58061128080 part so I am thinking it might have been built for another brand of engine. I am going to go get that wastegate to make sure the part number was read to me correctly and also to put it for sale on eBay.

On another turbocharger note....new turbo with a new wastegate will be installed next Wed.
