Two Seacocks on IPS - what is the second for

Silly question, but I just want to make sure.

There are two seacocks on the IPS drives, one is clearly inbound for the raw water impeller etc.

But there is a second one, that is on the STBD side of the drives...my manual does not reference what it is for. If I am winterizing, do I leave that Open or Closed while running antifreeze through.

(I know the strainer is under pressure and I need to remove the hose, so clear on that.)

Just not clear on the other if it is exhaust or another intake for the oil coolers on the drives.

that's the exhaust/water on the way out. the exhaust comes out of the pod under water, so you need to leave that open while dumping in antifreeze...then try to close it quickly to keep water from coming back into the engine compartment piece of the pod drive. personally, i run antifreeze through and keep an Xtreme heater in the bilge for this reason.

you mentioned the strainer being under pressure, and i'm not sure what you're referring to there...

my method is like this, YMMV. close both seacocks, open the sea strainer (i have the newer one that has a clear top and is mounted low). i use a shopvac to get as much water out of the supply line by shoving the shopvac hose into the sea strainer and towards the pod. then i open the exhaust seacock and start the engine while dumping antifreeze directly into the strainer. i usually dump in about 4G, but you can use a little soap in the strainer as you start and watch for bubbles in the river if you want to make certain. while still dumping in AF, i stop the engine and close the exhaust seacock. you can continue to dump in AF until the source pipe fills, and the strainer fills (usually about 1/2G). close the strainer and you're done.

Gotcha on the seacock...

As for the Strainer, on my engines, the strainer is on the PRESSURE side of the system, aka after the impeller. If I open the cover and try to dump in AF it will blow it all out....

So I have to pull the intake hose at the impeller intake and then use a 5 gal bucket to pull from.

So strange the setups are so different...but you also have a bigger engine...so they must have fixed the issue on the big ones.
 
ah, now i got ya. do you have the screw down cap? or the bolted down one? if it's the screw down cap, be careful with that setup as it can cause some issues if not installed correctly. my port side was cross threaded by a mechanic prior to me taking delivery and after the 10 day ride to my home port salt water had done its damage. I had to replace the house alternator which resides underneath that strainer to make things right.

afterword, I found a retro kit that Volvo sold to move the strainer in front of the water pump. i can't seem to find this part online right now. according to some forums they've gone back to this setup for the newer installs, but I haven't looked at one to confirm. a quick search online shows they're using the bolted down version on a 2013, not my pre-waterpump setup. pic attached.

they've started selling a retro kit to get away from the screw on lid to the bolted down one. see part # 21400685 below

Yup - Volvo really botched this setup, and they refused from day one to admit. And yes....they did "fix" this by moving back to the normal side on newer boats.

no worries! hate thinking about winterizing that's for sure. loving the hot and humid days we're having for now though. we'll make the best of it for as long as we can...
