Vinyl Seats for 2008 34 PC

After 10 years, I am thinking about replacing the vinyl seats in the cockpit if my 2008 34 PC. I can have the job done by a local canvas shop but I suppose I could also buy replacement vinyl pieces from Formula and then have the local shop do the installation. Has anyone been down this road and have any suggestions? Thanks!

Go the factory route. I did the entire cabin on my Fastech with factory skins and my upholstery guy was very impressed with the fit.

I have all of my cockpit cushions out of my boat right now (except the helm seat) and plan to order my new skins after the holidays, from the factory!

Dave

I second what Dave said, go to Formula. All skins from Formula will have the registration marks on the edges and assist greatly with the recover.

It is not inexpensive, but will be a perfect match to what you have now. They have all of the patterns and if you are doing it in phases, they have the matching vinyl. You can also change colors if you would like.

Getting the skins was not a viable option for me in the UK so I went to a number of high end re-upholsterers. They all said the same thing - It looked like Formula was doing an exercise on what could be achieved with compound curves and was overtly complex especially the helm and upper cockpit seating. They all quoted by the wheel barrow load. (and I'm talking 25% of the average workers annual salary here in the UK). So unless your upholsterer is particularly good, particularly cheap, then go for the skins. Nothing will be more disheartening than paying a ransom and not being completely satisfied that it has been done to the required standard.

(In the end I paid for 80 hours labour. You may want to factor that in when getting quotes if the quote differently)

Treads, your uphostery looks great. My understanding is that they do not do the colored inserts in older platforms and that the vinyl is all white.

That was not communicated to me when I ordered a seat replacement skin. I was told by the factory sales rep that they could match all colors as long as they still had the vinyl. There in lies the issue. I think it is model and color dependent.

What did it cost to replace all the vinyl?

Amazing Grace,

I ordered the complete set of skins for the entire cockpit of a 1993 34PC, which was originally a Palm Beach interior. Due to the age of the colors, the teal and pink were no longer available (didn't want the colors anyway) so for that vintage boat all they could do was white (which was our preference). The complete set was just a little over $5k. This consisted of all seat bottoms and backs for the cockpit, bottoms and backs for the helm seat and companion seat, 17 pieces total. What I really liked about getting them from the factory is all the original stitching was the same, they had all the registration marks for centering and locating the skins for installation. I did all the rebuilding of seats myself.

Thanks Treads. Seems reasonable given the alternatives. I think mine are available only in white too, but I hopefully have another couple years to squeeze out of mine.

Amazing, just for comparison, the local shop by my marina did a friends Formula from scratch, and had to cut apart each skin to template because the Owner wanted the original stitching pattern, just as I did. The shop fabricated the entire interior for $5500.00, which is what he quoted the Owner, said afterward it was one of the biggest mistake jobs he ever did, and would even think about it again for double the money. Formula has these patterns programmed, just depends on what color vinyl you want. The other consideration is that the Formula skins are foamed back which I have been told is not easily found, and does make a significant difference in how the skins look when installed.
