Hi All,

I was thinking that perhaps all of us who own these engines could swap ideas & problems as there appears to be a lot of us having the limp mode issue as well as the decrease in RPMs on one engine problems. Also, the engine engaging into gear while in neutral problem. This was a safety recall years ago of which I did not find out about until 2014 as the yacht broker who handled the purchase of my boat did not register the engines in my name with Volvo Penta. So, after all these years I finally have found a VP mechanic who knew the real fix for this situation and that is finally resolved....a big yippee for that problem of many years...GONE!

Let me know what you think all think.

Hey Divergirl, great idea, I have watched this problem on the forum for the past 7 years, as you know I own a 2003 with the Volvo TAMD 75P EDC engines, and to be honest after reading some of the problems I waited for some of these problems to appear in my boat. It never happened, however a few years ago I did experience a problem with my starboard not going into reverse, I removed the solenoid and cleaned it, replaced it and never had that happen again. Last year I had the Volvo amplifier installed as I found out it was a factory upgrade, after the install the starboard was erratic going into gear, we removed the transmission filter screen and found it had some dirt in it. We then removed the valve body, took it to the shop and cleaned it, replaced all the fluid installed the cleaned valve body and never had another problem. My boat is solid going in and out of gear. I mention this as the valve body on the transmissions is extremely important to the function of the transmissions, and sometimes overlooked and blame is put on the EDC, if you are getting 5 amps at the solenoid the EDC is working. I hope this makes sense to other Volvo owners and will help in eliminating some problems.

Thanks overboard....sharing any & all information is very helpful. I am going to copy & paste your info provided and send to my mechanic.

Has anyone replaced the turbochargers? I had to replace both...2016. I am guessing it was/is because of the salt & humidity and the fact that my boat is in the water 24/7/365. But, I am curious to know if anyone else has had to replace them.

In the beginning of the the Season, I had no forward on the starboard engine and found it to be a bad connection in a very hard to get at spot. Still a little concerned because I still want to put an access port for future problems because if I am out and it happened again there would be no way i could check it out there, I would have to come in on one engine. Well just last week i notice a 10 second delay going into forward on the port side. Did the Diagnostic thing and it showed nothing, all is good. So tomorrow mechanic is coming to check out solenoids, but we went all through that in the beginning of the season when I had no forward. We switched port to starboard and vice versa, so I am hoping it is just dirty filter. Apparently those solenoids are $1800.00 each. Will keep you posted. Since i have bow and stern thrusters docking has not been a problem with the delay.

Botjem. I had the same problem this week. Please tell us what connector to look for. I had no starboard reverse. Today went down. Took the connectors off the transmission and cleaned them. Looked at my solenoids they were clean and fluid looked good. Someone told me to look at the seals for the solenoids. Let me know what your mechanic finds out. These engines have too may electronic gremlins!!

There is a connector (never saw it just felt it). If you take out starboard speaker, and the two fuse boards above them, it is forward of them about a foot, where the side wall meets the console. We grabbed it and fiddled with it and it went into gear. We took out both instrument panel and switch panel hoping to see it but no luck. It’s below where the top half of the boat meets the hull section.
But that is not my problem now, I have delayed forward on the port engine about 12 seconds. Keep missing mechanic, he feels it’s in the solenoid.
i believe o rings are hard to get since Volvo no longer does business with that transmission company. I am getting the feeling Volvo burns their bridges when they stop using a company.
NOW a strange thing just happened today, I came down to the boat and opened her up and went to open the center window and it slide down the hinges, thr forward deck stopped it. Apparently it is held in by a screw in the center of the hinge and the screw goes into a plastic NUT, which of course is stripped and cracked. HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED THIS PHENOMENON???? I am sure Divergirl knows about this.

That’s good info Botjem. Please let me know if you have the single handle lever or split transmission and throttle levers. I think there is a difference in the wiring harnesses. Did you change the potentiometers in the handles? That can be an issue. I also cleaned all the contacts at the transmissions to the solenoids. This helped my delay issues. Also you can try to calibrate the handles. Let us know! Never heard of the center widow moving. That’s crazy.

Another thing - I posted a thread but got no responses or anything - It's Regarding original analog gauges. I had the NEMA 2000 system installed on my 41 and have digital gauges along with my analog gauges - MY problem - the analog gauges register 180 degrees yet the digital register 186 and 188, just a warning if you are relying on analog gauges, be careful.

Did Not Change Potentiometers but did switch them to see if that was the problem and it was not.

My dockmate just bought a 41pc from Massachusetts. It has the single lever combo throttle and transmission. It originally had the separate ones like we did and it was changed. He’s trying to find out the reason why it was changed. Maybe it can alleviate the issues we are having. My engine gauges run around 175 to 180.

Well if your's is anything like mine - you may really be running 5 to 6 degrees more than what the analog gauges are showing. My next step is to get into the engine room with a infra red temperature tester.

Regarding the Single Lever - it's to much like outdrives which I am not a fan of. Ironically my brother in laws last boat a Searay Sundancer 31' with outdrives had separate throttle and transmission levers just like an inboard and I was amazed and thought it was a great idea. What is the purpose of single controls???

I’m not a fan of the single lever controls either but this may be a resolution to the shifting and transmission issues. There is some drop in voltage through the harnesses which cause electrical failure. Less wiring = less issues??

Hi All....I was having problems with port going into forward. Mechanic found a hole in the port oil cooler and therefore it had to be replaced. They found a lot of tiny metal shavings in the oil and the solenoid screen so, they cleaned all that and replaced the oil with new oil when they installed the new oil cooler. Took Divergirl out for a sea trial on Sunday and she ran like a brand new boat...it was a happy & wonderful feeling to see her perform like that! The hole in the cooler was from rust and could not be fixed, unfortunately. But, like any problem, we keep plugging until we find the gremlin! GREMLINS stay away!

Hello. So we took the boat down the jersey shore 3 hour ride down perfect. This was after replacing all the Walker AIRSEP filters. Then on the way home same thing. Port engine RPM fluctuated for 5 sec and then perfect again. Thought the problem was fixed.
Ugh. Now I’m really stumped.
