warm water and barnacles

Walking down the dock sunday I observed two people cleaning the barnacles off the props with putty knifes. I decided to check mine and sure enough all four were loaded with barnacles. This is a first since I'm always on the move. I guess it's the warm water, so if you can an inspection it in order. Boating in south jersey.

If you have stainless steel props make sure you don't use a metal putty knife to remove them. I use the green scour pads as recommended on the Merc website. A plastic scraper also helps. I get stuck doing this anytime I can't take the boat out of the slip on a weekend.

Simply put the filter right at the hose bib in between the spigot and hose leading to the boat. The best solution is @ WalMart and costs approx $25.00. It's a Charcoal Filter with a short 5" hose with a spring around the hose. Works like a charm. Use it for 6 months and throw it away......

At least im not the only one in Jersey that noticed how bad the growth is this year. After re-powering and putting the new B3 on the boat I wanted to keep everything shiny and new looking. I was planning on hauling every month to give her a scrub and flush (joys of being a trailerable boat) but I noticed the sides of the boat had a bad case of the slimy fuzz, the new drive had barnacles and the zincs were withering away in 2 1/2 weeks!?

Well since then i will drop her in for the day or maybe overnight. The weather hasnt been good enough for any time span to actually leave it in and use it for an extended period of time. Plus shes cozy in the driveway at home.

So the charcoal in the filter melts the barnacles???

I suspect that Unforgettable's quote is on the wrong thread. His idea was "right on" though ;D.

I thought that the charcoal filters, which are like sponges, have a mount on them for a hose and you use them to clean stuff. Like a scrubby with a hose attached to it. He said it was a 5" hose.. Sorry I am not so intelligent, I never did finish my Masters. I didn't even know what a hose bib is, I had to look it up.....Since I have the same problem of mass barnacle attack and had addressed it by using my pressure washer, on the low pressure side, I wanted to see if there was another way. People posted to me that there was too many seals to be aware of that could be damaged by using the pressure washer. Last week I pulled barnacles out of the hoses that supply my generator cooling water. I would rather be the 'clown with class' if need be labeled as such, I was the only kid in school that came there by plane....
