Water Leak in Aft Cabin

Posting this for a friend, I haven't seen the boat but:

"I have a 2003 formula 400ss. I noticed that the aft cabin port side in the corner toward the stern was water. The mattress was soaked. I can't figure out where it's coming from. This has happen before after a strong rain. Does anyone know what might be the problem?"

Any help would be appreciated.

I had a similar leak on my 350, but on the starboard side. The water pump accumulator was leaking a constant mist which soaked the plywood supporting the aft cabin floor, so the carpet got wet, which got the mattress wet. Replacing the accumulator fixed the problem. I knew I had a water leak because the pump kept cycling on/off.. but I had to lift the mattress to find the wet carpet. If your water pump cycles on/off, then check to see if your accumulator is on the port side.

Thanks for the reply but this has only happened after a heavy rain (only happened twice in the three years he owned it). I would think if the windshield or door was leaking the front (bow side) of the mattress would be wet also.

Water can travel a long way. It could be from bow stanchions that need to be re-bedded or the anchor locker or an open portlight window.
