winterizing without outdrive

Hello All;
Had a great summer going but it was cut short when port gear box went south. (1987 28 pc w/alpha one twins) Did not hit anything that I know of, on plane at 3000 rpm for about half hour, when boat nosedived and engine reved up( no engine problems) Just hauled yesterday to get at the drives. today took the top cover off the upper gear box and just lifted the bearing and shaft out broke off at the lower gear. can turn the prop both ways, hearing a noise in the lower gear box. going to be a long weekend. Long range question; If need be, how can i winterize the motor without the drive and water pump?
Regards
Jack

I think the easiest would be to pull the drain plugs, take the hose off the thermostat, and pour in some AF until it comes out of the drain plugs, then you should be set.

Jack, take the drive off. Get an old hose and cut the end off. On the drive housing you will see the inlet for the water from the drive to the housing. A hole about the size of a nickel. Stick the hose in this hole and make sure it fits tight. Use tape to make the hose fit if needed. You don't want it popping out while your in the boat. Best if you have 2 people to do this.

DO NOT TURN ON WATER UNTIL THE ENGINE HAS STARTED. Again need 2 people. And no need to turn on the water full blast. Just enough to keep it cool. Note, just like when you had the drive on you still need to get her hot so thermostat opens to get the whole block full of antifreeze.

Then you can also run antifreeze thru same hose using 5 gallon bucket and a bilge pump set up.

Hope this helps

hey jack if the outdrive is toast, take a look at the SEI replacement out drives. i've seen several and installed a few, they seem to work great and very cost effective as opposed to a rebuild. be sure and check all your transom stuff and drive coupler while the drive is off too.

Results so far; the upper box is original 1987, the lower is a two year old SEI. Top box is broken vertical shaft at gear,lower box has stripped spline at top of shaft above water pump. Dont know which way the problem traveled, up or down. Cure in process is warranty repair of the lower and a new SEI upper. Could have made a goof by not getting complete units two years ago. Just another page in the "oops" book that is getting kinda thick. Thanks all for the feed back. Hope your seasons were/ are great.
