Yanmar 440

Thinking of buying an 05 Formula 40 PC. Can anyone direct me to thread or comment on valve problems in the 440 HP 6lya2a-stp. There was a service recall for this engine in Hinckley's. Is anyone concerned or aware of similar issues with formula. Thx

The valve recall was on the 6LP, not 6LY2. The 6LP had a valve issue and the Hinkleys were not propped right. I have the 6LY2's and they have been great so far. Make sure the boat is propped correctly, if It can't hit at least 3375 RPM wide open and fully loaded you could have an issue. Also, verify the tach's are correct using a photo tach.

Boatdiesel.com has a lot of information but if you have any questions let me know, I have spent hours in the engine compartment getting to know them. If you read too much online you will be scared of the diesels but again, so far so good.

Thanks for advice. Wish I never stumbled on this concern as agree reading too much can be misleading. Do have a service advisory dated jan 12 2010 for the 6ly2a-stp s/n m56928 and below. Also wondered if it was a hinckley specific. Others feel the preventive service should be done as when valve goes it causes engine loss. Advisory number is msa2010-001 if interested. Thx

I have the same boat; year, model, motors.
600 hours each and counting...knock wood, no issues.
Great motor...barely broken in at 600 hours.
If this is your biggest concern, buy the boat!!!

Nice to know Summersled. Serial numbers for Hinckley yanmar restricted product improvement program was M56928 and below. Still pondering buying boat if surveys well or needing a sale price which factors in replacing intake valves as done in hinckley. Thx
