Another showroom/dealership closes?

I heard a rumor that AGYG (a.k.a. NAMG) closed its Grasonville, MD office. This is where a lot of Formula boats were displayed and also where my boat was serviced when I needed warrantly work done. So, I took a ride over there today and YUP, they are no longer in that building. All the computers, service equipment, etc is gone. They still have a few Formula Boats in the showroom, but a For Sale/For Lease sign is on the building. This is terrible. So now all us Formula owners in MD are left out there alone to get warrantly work done by a dealer? Maybe someone has some information they can share. I checked all the windows and nowhere does it say they moved to a different location.

Dealerships are nice to have around. The said dealership was probably the closest dealer to me.That being 300 miles. Next closest is 400 miles and is land locked. I never had any problem getting warranty work done locally or out of state because the factory would always stand behind it. There are many great mechanics out there. Formula's are still just a boat with the same engines and systems as other boats. This is only temporary the dealers will be back when there is money to be made.

The dealer that I dealt with in Norwalk CT (Passport Marine) went out of business before my boat was even delivered (so I never received the post-sale service that I was supposed to receive). The boatyard where I keep my boat is an "authorized service center" so they have some experience with Formulas and they know some of the people in Decatur. The factory is supportive but they don't really control the local boatyard. One of the principal reasons I bought an (overpriced) new Formula was the promise of top-notch service, which has not really materialized. I think the lack of a dependable dealer network will lead to the deterioration of the Formula brand.

I've owned three Formula's (as well as "overpriced" Hatteras's) and do not feel that they were "overpriced". The old addage that you "get what you pay for" applies to boats also.
Maybe you should have bought a SeaRay.

I too do not find the Formula line to be overpriced. It's a high quality vessel, one which costs more than the garden variety vessel does. I guess some of it depends on the negotiated deal though.

As for the deterioration of the brand referenced above, I respectfully disagree.....at least to the extent that the same scenario applies to all brands uniformly across the board. Just my two cents though.

I am very happy with my Formula. It is a quality boat. I paid full price and I expected full service. Formula's factory service is good, but I just did not get the deal that was sold to me.

Without the "escape program" or continued deep factory discounts, I feel that the Formula will have continued pressure for sales.

AGYG in Grasonville has closed from what I understand. Early this year, about a month before they closed, they had moved out of the large indoor showroom and into a marina location down near the bridge in the same building with Harrison Yacht Sales. I bought a used 400ss last month and they were the owners broker on the deal. The guys that worked there did not look happy the day I picked up the boat and I got the impression that people hadn't been getting paid which is to bad because they are good guys and treated me great thru the whole process. I was just in time because they closed the place the very next day after I got my boat. I only know about it because the former owner of the 400ss has had major paperwork problems related to this deal due to AGYG going bankrupt.

Sorry to hear this.

The guy that was the head of the service department there was an exceptionally good guy. We had had some dealings with him when he worked for the previously defunct dealer in that area which NAMG replaced. I certainly wish him well, as well as all the others effected by this turn of events.

My thoughts also roam to the Annapolis Boat Show, and how this component will enter in to Formula's presence there.

Good point about Annapolis Boat Show. Will be interesting. I wonder if Formula will be at the bay bridge boat show in April.

I doubt Formula will let one of the oldest in-water boat shows slip away from them, having worked that show a couple years for the previous Formula dealer; Full Tilt, it's just too big of a show for the factory not to participate in my opinion.

Years ago my uncle had a 400 he bought from Trenton marine. He was down on the Mullica River so getting any service from Trenton wasn't realistic for him or the dealer. He was able to have a marina closer to him do warranty and service work, the factory had to authorize this, but as I remember, it wasn't a big deal.

Was your uncles name Bob?

Sadly, AGYG and NAMG are both out of business....Rhode River Marina and Rhode River Boat Sales are an authorized service center for Formula Boats. Rhode River Marina is a beautiful, clean, family run marina on the Rhode River in Edgewater MD and then their Rhode River Boat Sales office (which has mobile truck for service) is conveniently located right on Route 50 in Ocean City MD. They can be reached at (410) 798-1658.

That is sad news. I was hoping the rumor I heard was wrong! If you can share Rita, what is going to happen to all those beautiful Formulas sitting in your former showroom?

I miss that place too, I helped him build all those slips when he first bought that place back in the mid 80s. It was a huge part of my growing up into boating, spent many summers there as a kid.
