D6 Displays and NMEA 2000

Does anyone know if you can switch from the 2 small 4" monochrome displays to the new 7" display? Engines are 2007. Also has anyone set up theirs with NMEA 2000 to talk to a garmin 7600? Was it simple or a PIA? Do you loose any info? If it's set up properly can you simply ditch the Volvo displays?
Thanks,
Aaron

I've been trying to figure this out on my 09 D6's, but no luck yet....however there is a thread somewhere where someone MIGHT have figured it out....when I get a chance I will try to search.

Post it up if you find it... I'm working a deal on this boat and it has sun bunt volvo screens so I need to get a game plan together.

i put the N2K converter on my '08 45Y with D6-435-D/A's and feed it into a pair of Garmin 7612's, and a pair of GMI20's. i've posted on it here somewhere, but i don't know where. i'll try to find it...

the install itself is pretty simple...but i had a mechanic do it because i think they had some configuration to do which i didn't want to mess with. since then it's a perfect setup. the RPM's aren't as granular...50 RPM increments instead of 10, but other than that, I like the GMI20's a lot more. that, and i hate the EVC displays...i must have installed 6 new ones over the first few years of ownership. typically it's the backlight that goes out, and back then i couldn't fix it, i had to replace it.

one piece of advice...if you do replace the EVC displays, keep them somewhere. the ones with bad backlights are still visible in the daylight at least. i had mine installed into a new panel behind the access panel directly below the steering wheel. reason being, you can use the EVC control panel that's just below and inboard of the throttle controls, to troubleshoot the engines...but the info displays on the EVC displays. my mechanic would be mad at me if we didn't do that.

all in all, i wouldn't let bad EVC displays dissuade you from buying the boat. you can probably still buy new ones, or move to the N2K solution. also, i just did a quick google, and found this...

looks interesting, and $250 is less than the cost of a whole unit.

good luck!

twarble, you are saying you did away with the 4" Volvo display and replaced it with the Garmin gsi 20? if that works that is the way to go. new Volvo displays are about $1500.00 or $500.00 to fix. those Garmin look better and are cheaper than fixing. did you end up loosing an data?

hey Alindquist. just to be clear, i used to have part # EVC-B, B2. i moved these below and out of sight just for t-shooting purposes. now i have a pair of GMI20's installed on the dash where the EVCs used to be that i use to watch the engine specifics while we run. i have a default setup where i watch RPM, oil pressure, temp and battery voltage. i have a other screens where i watch fuel consumption, turbo pressure, nmpg, etc. the only thing you lose is the diagnostic feedback, and like i said, the RPM's are in 50 RPM increments, as opposed to 10 RPM increments. i do agree...they look so much better in full color, and are way more visible.

i love my new setup, and wouldn't go back!

Yeup I think so.....I wish I could switch to your setup, but I don't have the $$ this second to swap out the rest of my Raymarine stuff to make it all work...plus I the single large vessel view, that is all kinds of crazy and not sure most of it is even working :-(

I wish I would have found the burnt screen fix earlier, now that I am about ready to launch I don't want to part...guess I know what I am doing this winter.

Ok now I understand. That is a good idea to leave them installed just out of site. what converter did you have to buy to get the engines to talk to NMEA 2000?

looking at my old bill, it looks like there is a Volvo Penta Converter (NMEA Gateway 2000 Box) part # 3889758.

there's the E120, and the e120. not sure which you have, but since you're an '09, i'll guess it's what i usually call the E120 classic. don't believe that MFD is N2K compatible...but it does have SeaTalk 2 which is the same protocol wise...or at least it's supposed to be. you can apparently get an adapter cable to connect SeaTalk 2 to N2k backbone. see here...

if the protocol is indeed the same, then theoretically yes you would get engine data on the E120's.

Yeah I got CLASSIC BABY - thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Do you need a converter for each engine or just one? Does the "pigtail" plug in at the dash or back at the engine?
Here's a few pics for you...

That's Awesome thanks. Surveys are getting done this week so hopefully won't be long... I'm sure once I actually have it there will be a million more questions.

Thanks again.
