Hi All,
Most everyone knows the continuing saga of my Kohler 10 K EOZ gen. Actually the gen itself is fine and I am selling it so, if anyone has a good engine but a bad gen, I have one that works, has only 1,362 hours, and was all cleaned up nice & pretty because, apparently, in an attempt to try to diagnose, no one knew what else to do. I have pictures of all parts & pieces of the gen if anyone is interested.
So, the crank & block were taken to a machine shop and I was told the crank could not be turned. This is a Yanmar 3TNE82A. Yanmar wants $4,500 for a new long block and $3,500 for a short block. I cannot find anything used, engine wise, which is a fit right now. And, I would have to pay someone to actually put the actual generator back together because the dope that cleaned it up, actually took it apart. My feeling is that he was being vindictive but, that is a whole other story.
The guy who took the crank to the machine shop has found a 10 K Phasor gen set with 502 hours, with a Kabota (?) engine. He has not been back to measure to see if it will even fit in my engine room however, I contacted Formula Tech and they advised against it. I quote: "The best I can recommend would be to find a Kohler replacement if possible. I do not know what other generators would be compatible with how their hooked up like the Kohler units. We have typically only ever installed Kohler and Westerbeke generators here at Formula. The panels are wired to the Kohler gen set like in your boat but I'm sure can be hooked up to another unit. The things that may not match up are things like fuel hook up and exhaust piping from a different brand generator. Being you are looking at used units, I would try to find someone that specializes in marine generators and see what they can do to help with the retro fit. I wish I could be more help but with that model boat no longer being built and Kohler getting out of the marine generators I'm not sure what to recommend for a replacement" As far as I can tell, and from the last year, no one specializes in marine generators!
So, anyone out there in Formula world have any sage words of replacement advice?
Meanwhile....she is running like a champ but, then again, why wouldn't she with 2 new turbos, a rebuilt port tranny, new hynautic steering cylinder, new electrical system, etc.
