Generator Replacement

Hi All,

Most everyone knows the continuing saga of my Kohler 10 K EOZ gen. Actually the gen itself is fine and I am selling it so, if anyone has a good engine but a bad gen, I have one that works, has only 1,362 hours, and was all cleaned up nice & pretty because, apparently, in an attempt to try to diagnose, no one knew what else to do. I have pictures of all parts & pieces of the gen if anyone is interested.

So, the crank & block were taken to a machine shop and I was told the crank could not be turned. This is a Yanmar 3TNE82A. Yanmar wants $4,500 for a new long block and $3,500 for a short block. I cannot find anything used, engine wise, which is a fit right now. And, I would have to pay someone to actually put the actual generator back together because the dope that cleaned it up, actually took it apart. My feeling is that he was being vindictive but, that is a whole other story.

The guy who took the crank to the machine shop has found a 10 K Phasor gen set with 502 hours, with a Kabota (?) engine. He has not been back to measure to see if it will even fit in my engine room however, I contacted Formula Tech and they advised against it. I quote: "The best I can recommend would be to find a Kohler replacement if possible. I do not know what other generators would be compatible with how their hooked up like the Kohler units. We have typically only ever installed Kohler and Westerbeke generators here at Formula. The panels are wired to the Kohler gen set like in your boat but I'm sure can be hooked up to another unit. The things that may not match up are things like fuel hook up and exhaust piping from a different brand generator. Being you are looking at used units, I would try to find someone that specializes in marine generators and see what they can do to help with the retro fit. I wish I could be more help but with that model boat no longer being built and Kohler getting out of the marine generators I'm not sure what to recommend for a replacement" As far as I can tell, and from the last year, no one specializes in marine generators!

So, anyone out there in Formula world have any sage words of replacement advice?

Meanwhile....she is running like a champ but, then again, why wouldn't she with 2 new turbos, a rebuilt port tranny, new hynautic steering cylinder, new electrical system, etc.

My opinion:
Formula will not advise using anything other then what was installed originally, just to much liability. Almost any band of Gen can be installed in the boat, just needs to be reviewed so far as the points listed above by Formula tech. Fuel and electrical connections are minor, all can be routed in almost any direction to achieve end requirements. The main issue is the exhaust, so it needs to come out nearby where the muffler currently is. Water intake is also not much of an issue, but then again I have not looked indepth into the engine compartment

You have sure been through the issues with the boat and string a repair folks. Look forward to hearing your up and running with all good news.

Hi Divergirl. I am no expert but have not heart of that brand. My guess is that either westerbeke or kohler are the most common and likely to have parts available if the need arises. Let us know what you decide.

What is the cost of the Phasor Gen?

Reason for asking is there is
Northern Lights
Onan (Cummins small Gen)
Whisper Power
Isuzu
Kubota
Cummins (Large Gen)
Maybe others

Phasor is actually a very well touted generator. The guy wants $5,500 for it and another $1,000 for the sound shield. I would prefer to stay with a Kohler if I could find one.

Nice to hear from you. I don't think I have seen a post from you in quite a while. All good up there in NYC?

Have no known issues with Phasor, just wanted to know the price to determine if there was a better price. Will look around

All quiet up here. Boat is shrink wrapped as usual. Working like crazy. Now starting to think about all the spring projects! Wish the season here was longer.

Diver Girl, sounds crazy but give Mike at Marine Specialist a call, he did some work for me and is very knowledgable and likes to talk. He is at every Boat Show and I have sent people to him (516-580-0545) with great results. Its worth the call.
Regards to jlazzfp - yes NE season way too short - trying to get in by early April.

Mike @ Kismet Marine 888 956 6946, he was very helpful with a friend of mines Westerbeke. Very curious to know what you end up doing here so I hope you keep the forum up to date on it.
