Imron Repair

I use one of the upper aft cleats on my 34PC for a spring line that runs towards the bow at my dock. The spring line, over time, has rubbed off about 1/2" of the black imron stripe that runs adjacent to the cleat (including the grey primer that was underneath the black imron paint). (I have since solved the chafing issue by using a fender to keep the line away from the paint.) Does anyone have any idea where to get a small quantity of the paint and primer so I can do the touch up?

Man, this is NOT an easy touch up.

HOWEVER you can most likely get the paint codes from Formula and auto paint or airplane local paint shop should be able to order it for you.

You are right about that. The guy I used to fix my fiberglass also sprays Imron and I asked him to touch up a few spots and he told me it would not look right and I would not be happy with the result unless he sprayed a large area. Foggy, I would be interested in knowing how it turns out if you try it.

Good luck. I was quoted $2,000 to paint my Silver Diamond Pearl to cover up 16 - 1/8" nicks caused when we rafted up and a fender let go.

I was explained to me that it is very, very difficult if not impossible to feather out the Imron paint. As such, the quote was to paind above the rub-rail on the entire side of my boat.

Needless to say, I still have the nicks..... ;(

YOU GUYS NEED TO TAKE A FACTORY TOUR, AND TALK WITH THE OLDER GENTELMEN THAT FIXES ALL THE FACTORY MISTAKES. HE WILL SHOW YOU HOW ITS DONE. I PICKED HIS BRAIN THE LAST TIME I WAS THERE, WATCHING HIM DO A SPOT REPAIR ON SILVER DIAMOND PEARL. I DID NOT SEE THE FINISHED PRODUCT, BUT ACCORDING TO HIM, HE HAS DONE IT MANY TIMES, WITH 100 PERCENT SUCCESS.

OK I will get in touch with Formula. I will take a cell phone pic and post it as well. This is literally less than a half-inch, so there is no way I am spending a lot of money on it. I built a contraption out of pvc and 2 fenders to keep the spring line away from the paint. I will let you know how I make out with Formula.

OK I spoke with Formula. The Formula rep basically confirmed what everyone else has stated here. Formula will sell me the chroma premier paint, but it really needs to be sprayed on. and then the clear imron really needs to sprayed on top of the chroma premier to achieve the gloss. So, I have a plan (which will probably get me demoted back to junior member on this forum): I am going to stop at the auto parts store, buy some black touch up paint, use masking tape to block off the spot, and give it a whirl. The Formula rep said that this will not be perfect but will probably be good enough. Stay tuned. -- Junior Member Foggy.

Gsent, sounds like Formula will provide good free advice for those Indiana locals.
What Formula SCHOULD DO is provide a list of repair, paint technicians, trained and certified be Formula that are located "World Wide".
Unfortunately people like Unforgettable and myself are at the mercy of the local talent that may talk a good job, but may actually be learning the process on OUR boats. ???

I BELIEVE THAT THE FACTORY GUYS ALSO COME TO DIFFERENT DEALERSHIPS, AND SHOW THEIR KNOWLEDGE.
I GUESS IF THE CUSTOMER IS WILLING TO PAY, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN.
MOST DEALERS DO NOT HAVE THE RIGHT CONDITIONS FOR APPLYING IMRON. VERY HAZARDOUS.

OK although I am not happy to admit it, I touched up the problem with Interlux Brightside polyurethane black enamel. I taped off the area (which was about the size of a dime) with masking tape, did a very light sanding, and applied the paint. We'll see how it wears, but right now it looks basically perfect. You can tell the difference on a close inspection, but a casual observer would never pick it up (even at noon Unforgettable!). So, we shall see. Salt water may take its toll.

Sounds like your now the "Go To Guy" for fiberglass and finish repair.
Any interest in a Metalic Emron repair job in Fla. ?? ;D

Hey I wish I could make a living in something connected to the boat business.

Foggy would love to break into a boat related business. Unfortunately (much like the Real Estate market) The Repo business is flourishing.
Their are marinas in Miami that are JAMMED with foreclosed and Repo'd boats that are either going to auction or loaded onto freighters to go overseas.
Don't feel bad about getting lost. It was quite an obscure stretch to make a joke about breaking into the marine industry.
