IS the 2000 41PC NMEA 2000?

Anyone have any knowledge about NoLand industries?? How about the ECI - 100?? My Analog hour meters do not work along with my Engine sync gauge, it works until 1500 RPM then constantly fluctuates the full spectrum on the PS of the gauge only.

I looked at updating my dash with the Noland products but never did. is their system installed on your vessel?
They have several ways to convert analog to nmea to both 0183 and 2000. Also have the ability with software to output to a PC and have flat screen engine displays.
The Volvo's are probably electronic controlled motors which interface with J1939 language protocol. That's the same as OBD 2 in the cars, although you can't direct talk to OBD equipment. Noland products are supposed to interface.

Wow you lost me at updating! i'm looking for a code reader just to keep in my arsenal of tools. I e-mailed one company and their quote was $2400.00, little too much just to know the hours. I just filled up yesterday and after 110 NM I used 184 gallons, does that seem accurate to you?

Sorry, didn't mean to confuse.
I have always liked electronics and gadgets. (old guy not supposed to know this stuff)
You could try Actinsense for their products that will interface with a laptop usb port and could read the engine computers (I believe some additional software is needed). If you have a more modern display then you can display NMEA 2000 data. It can be interfaced with the engine computers and you can read the data. Actually even my older Raymarine C80 has the ability to display engine data, but my engines are mechanical. Hope fully someone will chime in and let us know if the Volvo's are electronic.

Thank You, will check out Actinsense, and I have a few laptops laying around, it would be great if I can use my Apple Laptop

Was looking on Volvo site and saw the the new Volvo complete dash panel and wondered if they are compatible with older versions? Having trouble getting to Volvo Corporate, they refer you to their dealers, who so far have been un cooperative or do not return phone calls.

I'm going to simplify this. If your engines have electronic controls then you can interface them with any display with NMEA 2000 protocol. It only takes 3 or 4 wires to send information. One will be 12 volt to power a display. If you already have a NMEA 2000 compatible display you can ignore the power wire. All thats left is communication. One wire will send data, one may be ground, and one will receive data. There may be corresponding grounds for send and receive but I believe that's only for older NMEA 0183. You need to hook up the send wire from the engine computer to the receive wire for the display then use the menu to read the data. It may only be one wire to hook up. Hope this helps.

Unfortunately in the world of Volvo I'm not so sure it's that simple.... I believe Volvo owners need a specialty interface to enable that.

How does one get that interface?? I have been in the bilge the last couple of days formularizing myself with the workings, having been in the Truck mechanical field with the last 20 as Supervisor so turning wrenches was stopped, dealing with personalities and issues is more my expertise, I am re learning more than I want to. Not feeling warm and fuzzy about the mechanics I have been contacting and this not being able to read the engine is the icing on the cake. Just another problem I will have to fix. Thanks for the insight. So Volvo is like Apple - not letting anyone fix their stuff. Ironically in the 70's I owned a 1966 Volvo 142 and it feels like I stepped back in time.

Honestly I'm not exactly sure how the interface works but essentially you have to get it from Volvo and it will take their proprietary communication and open up to NMEA

Just got off phone with Actisense and he did the leg work and told me my volvos are J1708 and not compatible with any of Actisense products, so he couldn't make a sale and still helped and he recommended the other link I thing you sent me with Yacht World and their product is the J1708 Gateway YDES-04. Will call them but wish Actisense was able to help because they have EXCELLENT Support.

Guess I will also try the Noland Product Line. I have a nice winter project.

Keep us posted
The older protocol is actually easier to hack
Heavy trucks use both systems depending on year and the ecm for diesels have slightly different programming having to do with injector pulse and rpms but they are the same engine computers

I made an error it was not Yacht World it's Yacht Designs and I was on this morning and e-mailed them a question and maybe this is the solution to my problem and ironically it's $400, the same amount I was willing to spend on a Reader. QUESTION though you mentioned the older versions are easier to Hack, what actually does that mean?? What can happen to me???

Spoke with Nolan and they cannot help and also just received an E-Mail from YACHT DEVICES and they have a J1708 Engine Gateway YDES-04 and a text display monitor which I mentioned earlier and they said yes it would work. Just skeptical of a company that does not have a Phone support number just e-mails.

Just got off the phone with Peter of Actisense and they will be carrying the Yacht Devices line in 30 days and I set up a meeting with him at the Lauderdale show, so all is well in the world of boating.

I used incorrect terminology, just meant the older protocol is easier to read and decipher, sorry.
Will be really curious how you make out.
