Outboard Repower

This is a great new thread. Im wondering if anybody out there has done a repower from I/O to outboards.
I have been thinking on doing this for a long time. Im on my 2nd Formula 280 ss and getting tired at the difficulty of access to do maintenance on my mercs plus if I can shed almost 1,000 lbs off the boat I'm sure I will run a bit faster and with less fuel.
Who builds the brackets for the outboard powered formulas?
will the weight of outboards further back cause any issues ?
is the transom strong enough to hold a bracket with pair of outboards?

I made the jump to and OB boat for similar reasons that you mention. I thought I read something about a similar repower but I think it was on The Hull Truth. I tend to hate that site as the conversation always devolves into someone telling someone how stupid they are. But if you sift through the BS you get some good info. Net, I think that is a difficult and expensive process to undertake. I have no doubt your swim platform is not designed to hang that kinda weight off of it. You did mention transom brackets so maybe you are considering eliminating the platform? In doing so, you would find that accessing your OBs for normal checks and maintenance would prove difficult as you need to be able to get out to the OB. On the dock that would suck. On a trailer or beached not so bad. Broken down underway would be miserable. That also leaves you with the issue of boarding, again assuming you are eliminating the platform. From the dock you guests will all have to step over your gunwale and depending on your side, onto your seating. And you would have to install some type of swim ladder or maybe smaller side platforms like you see on some boats. That might not be a bad solution but this all seems to be very expensive!

With that said, keep us posted if you find anything out about the cost and mechanical process! That would be a fascinating project! Esp if you hand a 557 7 Marine back there!

After a lot of thought, investigation and fed up with constant maintenance I decided to go the full monty, twin zukes 300's. Engines are out and sold, bracket ordered, will see what happens...IMG_1531.jpg

engine bay cleaned, Saturday transom holes will be sealed, Monday for bracket installation, hopefully next wednesday installing twin Zukes 300. Very excited and a bit scared.IMG_E2288.jpg

Here we go...tomorrow installing engines. Nice and clean dash panel, just two gauges, backup depth finder and volt gauge for accessories battery.

Looks like it's going to be a fairly clean install, really doesn't seem to intrude on the swim platform as bad as I thought it would. Who makes the bracket you're using?

I don't lose an inch of the swim platform, the swim ladder, Armstrong SL3-34 goes in the port side, much comfortable than the original. Bracket was built by a local guy who builds for the Avanti boats brand, 30% cheaper than Stainless Marine. Sea trial tomorrow morning.IMG_2552.jpg

We did Sea Trial today, conditions were terrible, NE 20 knots wind, super choppy and trim tabs were not working (already fixed). We managed to do 54.1 mph. I will try again when conditions improve. Im sure I can improve top speed quite a bit considering how bad was the weather today. IMG_2562.jpgIMG_2564.jpgIMG_2557.jpg

This is a completely different ball game, the grunt of these outboards is impressive to the throttle response. I may need to lower engines since I get some cavitation sometimes, still lots of fine tuning to do but already faster and better fuel consumption.

FYI, filled the tank this morning, on average I was doing 1.55 miles per gallon now it went up to 1.96 m per gal.
