Underwater Lights

Has anyone replaced the underwater lights? More than half of the individual LEDs are out and those that are lit are dim. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Look for radiocontester thread on upgrades, he just replaced his

i did mine a few years ago. i'm sure there's a post here that covers it...but in short, if your boat is old enough and it has the series 2020 LEDs, it's a really horrible choice for that boat IMO. it has a separate driver, and either the light, or the driver likes to burn out. last time i purchased a replacement, they said i got one of the last ones from OceanLED. the real issue IMO is that there's a cable that connects to the light..and those bilges aren't dry bilges. the center one in particular loves to short out when it becomes submerged under water inside the engine room.

i swapped them out for OceanLED S3116s, and was thrilled. they're not that expensive, and the Lumens were up there. that, and there's an integrated driver, so no more issues with lights shorting out.

that being said, i did have 2 lights that got water immersion behind the lens...it was before the expiration of the 2 year warranty, and OceanLED swapped them out free of charge, and no hassle.

good luck with the swap!

We just had (5) Lumintec X2 installed on our 45. I?m new to the forum so not sure how to post pics. We are awaiting delivery so don?t know what they look like yet.

Oh You! went through an extensive rework in 2019. Among other things we installed Shadow-Caster SC-24 underwater lights plus the basic controller. (https://shadow-caster.com/). So far (1-year) we're happy with the performance. Below are some examples. They offer two different controllers. The basic controller has several modes that set and change colors, make them flash, etc. I plan to replace that controller with one that allows programming of colors from Garmin chartplotters, and sync with music. Shadow-casters are manufactured in Florida, but I found the company to be somewhat inconsistent in responding to questions, and their supplier network even more unreliable. They've been around for a decade or more, so that inconsistency is troubling.

Thanks for the comments. The boat yard is expressing concern over the removal of the original lights and the current thru hull hole size. I haven’t seen what they are concerned about yet. Any ideas?

It?s a 45 Yacht. The factory hole is much larger. It appears that these are mounted through the transom with a nut on the inside of the hull. Similar to the way through hull transducers are mounted. The yard is concerned that with the surface mount type they will need to reglass the larger, factory holes.

i actually did exactly that when i went from the 2020s to the 3116s. not a huge job, but you do need a fiberglass guy to fill in the hole.

yea these are the new thru hull ones. 10k lumens, they say they can be serviced while in the water once they are installed. They are high as a giraffes ass $$. cant wait to see them next season.

Our innovative internal relay simplifies wiring and significantly reduces installation costs and complexity. A Solid bronze housing requires only a 3? mounting hole and full-color control is capable using any standard on/off switch or add Lumitec?s ?Poco? Digital Lighting Control module, sold separately, for even more advanced features.

I ended up going with three Lumishore TX-403 Blue/White LED's last spring. They are a premium LED but I didn't want to mess around with premature failures and boat hauling's to repair/replace with the lower cost units. They fit perfectly in the existing transom cores and some new wiring. I attached spec sheet and install links.

That is a serious investment. You aren't fooling around with those.

I might try to find a stainless steel plate to cover the holes then mount surface lights.
